Health folklore: Do you believe in the power of a full moon?

Are you suspicious about full moons? I know people who swear that more crimes are committed, more babies are conceived and born, and more people are admitted to hospitals on nights where the moon is full. And when my sister told me her prediction--that my baby would be born on December 12 (next Friday!), when a full moon is predicted, I wondered what research had to say on the topic--and what you thought, too...

****
Let me preface this by telling you that I am probably the least superstitious person I know. Cemeteries don't even freak me out. But I was a little spooked at what I read about full moons and how they affect human behavior.

Past studies suggest that some wacky things happen when a full moon is in the sky. For instance, University of Miami researchers analyzed crime data over the course of 15 years in the Miami area and found that violent crime was more likely to be committed on--you guessed it--full-moon nights. Still more studies have suggested that full moons bring out other scary behaviors, such as arson, risky driving and kleptomania. (Would you dare try this daring stunt during a full moon?)

But what about our health? One British study found that more people visit hospitals or make doctor appointments in the days preceding a full moon. Even so, the researchers have no idea why.

As far as more babies being born on days where the moon is full, I haven't found any solid evidence. But, I did talk to a few delivery room nurses a few years ago who swore that full moons brought in more deliveries than regular nights. So, I guess I'll have to wait until December 12 to see if the prediction is true for me!

What do you think about full moons and the supposed connection to human behavior? Do you buy it or think it's a bunch of baloney? Or, do you have any crazy-but-true full moon stories? If so, share! And, what's your prediction for my delivery? Will Vitamin G's first baby be born on a full-moon night?

I really wish I didn't but the men around me have proven that their moods are insane during the full moon. I follow the cycle so I know when to brace myself.

Look forward to your blogs. I am a Health Nut!!! Everyone calls me that. I also eat junk, as much as I can and get it out of my system until the next craving. The only vitamin I don't take is G.

    Oh, A baby!! Good luck.

The ancients use to believe the moon controlled the menstrual cycles of women. Both lunar and menstrual cycles are about four weeks. Also, research exists to support the idea that crimes and hedonistic acts are performed more often during a full moon. Oh, and the word "lunatic" is derived from "luna" which refers to the moon in Latin.

There is some debate as to whether there are actually more crimes com-

mitted under full moons. Some say that ER workers just tend to remember

full moon nights better. An evening with many cases without a full moon

may be forgotten (and they certainly happen, a full moon is only every few weeks. I can't believe that their ONLY busy times are once a month.)

That said, the moon definitely affects tides. The changes in ocean tides affect the air, which affects us, since we breathe it. The chan-

ges may be very subtle. It's like the way the weather can be affected by very small things half the world away. More research is needed.

I work with dementia patients...99% of our staff will attest that it is an absolute fact: Difficult behaviors worsen markedly during the full moon. "They" say it can't be proven, but all I need is what we experience every single month in the workplace!

After working for 13 years in a hospital YES! Labor and Delivery explodes! ER gets busier. And the old wives tale that it effects haircuts is true! Ge your haircut on a growing moon phase your hair will grow fater than normal, get it cut on a waning moon phase, it will grow slower. Keep a record of it and see for yourself. When my son was little and money was tight I would make sure the moon was waning, his haircut would last 3-4 weeks instead of 2!
