Healthy Reminder: Check Expiration Dates on EVERYTHING at the Grocery Store

My dears, you won't believe this: I was at the grocery store over the weekend, and I found two outdated food products--one expired in 2007! Wait until you hear what they were...

Yes, I was a tad bit horrified when I realized that a jar of baby food I almost bought for my son expired in 2007. 2007! That's 3 years ago, people. (And yes, I promptly walked up to the front of the store and told everyone who would listen at customer service!)

Related: Put this healthy (and fun!) thing on your to-do list for the week!

But that wasn't all: A can of condensed milk I was looking at also expired 6 months ago.

OK, yes, recently expired canned/jarred foods probably aren't going to kill us, but there's a reason why food comes with expiration dates: freshness and taste often takes a nosedive after the sell-by date and nutrients can drop off too. And for some products (hello condensed milk!), an expired date could mean a health risk.

I know, checking expiration dates is a no-brainer, but I think so many of us are in a hurry at the store and blindly assume that if it's on the shelf it's all good. And, sadly, that's not always the case--even at the best, most health-conscious grocery stores.

Happy, healthy shopping my dears!

P.S. Funny story: When I was about 13, my grandma pulled out a box of gingerbread spice cake mix from her cupboard that was stamped with the date "1972." Can you believe that? I shyly told her, and she tossed it. Whew!

Can you even imagine?

Great tip, Sarah! There's a small family-run grocery shop at the end of our street. We only shop there if we run out of milk, but we've found yogurt there with expiration dates that were months old!

I had my own gingerbread snafu last Christmas. I made gingerbread cookies that came out hard as a rock and tasted awful. My husband took a look at the package and the mix had expired 7 years ago. Yikes!

This is also why many foods are reduced for sale. The expiration date has come and gone or is very near. Most people don't look at their spice racks. When I moved, I did. Some of my spices were four years out of date. Super Yuck!

Yes it is true!!! I worked for Albertson Grocery for 16 years and let me tell you night crew does not have time to throw a load rotate food items. I can walk into any grocery chain and find out of date products any time in any store. Old batches of cake mixes, pancakes, syrup, canned milk, spices, etc.. I would have to say 2-load out of the week I rotated all items coming in and it took almost entire month to get stuff rotated out. They made up a checklist you would mark off and have to get it done on a weekly basis then nightcrew would stock the shelves and every little rotation was put out of wack. I loved working in the grocery business and would go back in a heart beat but people just dont care about other people so alway CHECK THE DATE!!!

Bugs will grow out of rotten cake mix. I witnessed it first hand when I opened some boxes of expired Jiffy Corn Bread mix. These bugs where burrowing through the cake mix the way ants burrow through ground. The funny part is that there weren't any visible ways for the bugs to have gotten into the package. Beware!

Check the OTC medications, too. Have found some out dated stuff there.

I have a friend that had stock piled can goods from 1997. When I told him I was cleaning out the old cans, some were rusted and some were bursting, he almost came unglued. He thought it was a waste of money. I asked him if he would risk his granddaughters life on old food. The cans were tossed!

I always check - especially DAIRY... I've had some nasty experiences!!!

Also, brown sugar, squeeze the box to see if it's HARD. I have had a lot of bad experiences with getting a rock hard chunk of brown sugar - not really easy to bake with!
