How do you kick a candy habit?

Lately I've been in a sour candy kinda mood. And, although we all know giving in to the occasional craving is good, a feeding change to the vending machine until it spits out the sugary snack of our choice is not exactly a healthy habit.

Luckily, I found a solution. Warning: It is NOT pretty...

Here it is: Unsulfured apricots!

See, I told you it wasn't pretty. But the truth is, these wholesome treats (ingredient list: Apricots) are slightly sour and more chewy than the prettier dried apricots (which contain sulfur as a preservative), so they provide the same tongue-tickled feeling as sour candies.

What do you eat to avoid going overboard on sweets?

Personally... I buy one candy on the weekend when I am grocery shopping... and then I do not bring any hard cash to work with me, because it's too easy to change even that $20 into fives and ones and then down to quarters... I just avoid what's going to fuel that temptation during the work week... don't keep it in the house don't make it accessible at work... I know to some it maybe too harsh... but I love sweets of any kind and to stay motivated I HAVE to be harsh when it's so easy to get to...

I've decided to just go cold turkey off any kind of candy. Tell you what, I don't miss it.

I like to eat green apples when I crave sugar. It has natural sugars and has fiber.

I either buy individually wrapped candies and hide them (I have a roommate so if I put them in my clothing drawer, it makes me self-conscious to take them out to eat them in front of her. Funny maybe, but it works) or I share with a friend.

When I crave fruity or sour candies I reach for a peach, plum, or sometimes even a few slices of lime. That usually takes care of it. Now when I am desperately wanting chocolate candy that is hard--there frankly is no healthy substitute for a bag of M&M's or a caramel/walnut brownie.

I go for the whole grain cereals then add dried cranberries and dried blueberries. Pour some fat free (skim) milk or soy milk and you have a deliciously sweet treat.

I stopped eating doughnuts "cold turkey". I missed it for about a week and that was that. Haven't had one in four years. I think that could work too with candy, but I haven't tried it. I limit myself though so I don't go in the store and buy enough candy to last a week at a time. But I will go for the occasional pack of pb m&m's.

Katie B-have you been following me around? Because that's exactly what I do! I usually go grocery shopping Friday after work, and I'll let myself buy one kind of candy as a treat. I'm not really a chocolate person, so it's usually something sweet like Starbursts or Gumdrops or something.

Same thing with work-I never take cash or change to work, so there is nothing for the vending machines, and I keep apples and yogurt in our department refrigerator.

To ward off any craving, sweet or salty, I drink coffee!

I love chocolate! I used to have the biggest sweet tooth, but when i noticed i was getting chubby, i went cold turkey on all junk food/candies. I started eating salads, fruits, veggies, etc but when I would really get the munchies, I would purposely buy trail mix with nuts, dried fruit and the little chocolates interspersed in the bag and keep it in my car. That way I would munch on a handful and it would usually do the trick. I also started running and working out with a personal trainer 3x a week each. After several years of this lifestyle, I no longer crave anything sweet, processed, sugary, refined, or any junk food whatsoever. I am addicted to fruits, veggies, whole wheats, lean meats, oatmeal etc. As much as I disliked salads is how much i love them now, maybe even more. Nothing beats feeling good inside your body and looking good on the outside as well.
