How Do You Snap Back from Shape Up Failure? Here’s What I’m Doing

0903-writingresolutions_sm.jpg
Dear Shape Up! readers,

I feel like I’ve lost sight of my goals. You’ve all witnessed my struggle in the last couple of weeks: the frequent mad searches for fro-yo; the infamous cheeseburger and fries encounter and the emotional night I polished off an ice cream carton…And then, after a weekend of vacation eating, somebody asked me if I was pregnant! I also had to restrain myself from eating an entire jar of peanut butter a couple of days ago. What is going on with me? I was feeling like a total Shape Up! failure until reader jjsweetie commented on my peanut butter problem and snapped me out of it. Here’s what she said:

You can have the real thing and you CAN limit yourself to only 2 spoonfuls. If you throw it out you are saying to yourself that you don't have any self control. You have self control…

And it’s true--even if I have had a series of mess-ups, I DO have self-control, I just need to exercise it. I can’t let a few poor choices undo months of good ones.

So yesterday I pulled out my journal and wrote out a list of new food resolutions. I know it’s not a new year, but that is my way of getting down to business. And besides, why wait for a new year, when every day is an opportunity to start fresh?

So here’s what I’ve resolved:

1. To not bring anymore ice cream cartons or peanut butter jars into my home
2. To quit eating past 11 PM
3. To plan my meals and snacks ahead of time once again
4. To note my emotional state in my food diary for a while, so that I can ensure I'm eating for the right reason (i.e. I'm hungry, and nothing else!)
5. To reincorporate beans into my diet (They’re a great source of protein and great for weight-loss!)

How about you? How do you snap back from failure? And how often do you make new resolutions? Do you need to make some new ones about your eating or exercise habits today? Please share!

xoxo,
Karina

I also love peanut butter. But I've learned the hard way that I can't just ignore cravings. Now, I have a peanut butter and jelly sandwich everyday for breakfast. I've augmented my favorite peanut butter and jelly recipe with 4 tablespoons of peanut butter to just 1 in order to cut back on calories. I hardly miss the other 3 tablespoons knowing that I'm saving about 24 fat grams! And it still tastes delicious!

I also love peanut butter with apples- so yummy!

3 years ago i was working out with a trainer who told me that for women only (of course!) a pb&j is one of the WORST things i could eat. i was crushed as they are my all time favorite. i just switched to natural peanut butter and felt a little less guilty. by the way as i type this i'm disgusted with myself for eating over half(ok so it's practically empty) a mini oreo go pack. tomorrow i start fresh :)

peanut butter on toast is an amazing breakfast. in all honestly, i have realized that planning what i will eat just doesnt work. i keep a diary-type thing in my phone, keeping track of the number of calories i am ingesting. it helps. a lot. i am 5'5" and 122 lbs because i watch what i eat and by writing down calories, it kinda makes you think twice. i mean, there are always days where you slip up. we're human.

I do not agree re to Peanut Butter as it is a great source of Protein and about every weight loss program all calls for PB. Eat it on some crackers or veggies or fruits etc and that is a good snack and good for you.

I feel what she is doing is the opposite of what the article stated to not do. It stated to not throw out foods as that is a form of lost control and that is what she is doing re to PB and Ice Cream. Just do not eat it all in one sitting. There are good Ice Creams out there to eat.

i thinkyou have to hit rock bottom (whatever that is for each person) before you can start working your way back. we all have our low points, and sometimes you have to hit them to see where you came from and what is ahead.

losing weight is one of the hardest things you'll ever do. for people who haven't had to do it, consider yourself lucky. it's like having another job. it's WORK!!! but just like a pay check, it can be rewarding.

For the last 6 months (up until about 8 weeks ago) I was a food and exercise fanatic. I had my food journal, I had my exercise program, I deprived myself of everything I loved (ice cream, chocolate, relaxation, etc.) until of course I would over indulge and quickly roll off the wagon.

I've stopped all that. I realized that my eating was a way to keep myself in control of something. My hubby was on disability for 6 weeks, he was not able to do anything, I was overwhelmed and stressed out at work and at home, and food and exercise were the only variables I was able to control. I also found that keeping the food journal and exercising fanatically I had actually GAINED weight!!! Ick...and it wasn't muscle.

So, now, I have gotten back on my anti-anxiety meds (Wellbutrin) and I don't feel the need to be so controlling. I still eat healthy (dinner tonight was salmon and edamame with a white wine spritzer), but I'll probably have some fro-yo with the hubby later. I missed the gym, but was able to catch up on some things around the house...still feel great.

This idea of obsession often times gets people into tight corners without good results (ME!) I still think I could work harder to get what I think is ideal, but the sacrafices are often times more work in the wrong direction.

I say, find your own wagon!!

I'm a freshman in college and have to deal with having food in my room at all times but not snacking on it. I don't buy things I know I'll polish off super quickly, like almonds, ice cream, large bags of candy, and other sweet things. I buy the smallest jars of peanut butter I can find because I do love it but don't want the freshman 15.
