How to avoid post-election depression when your candidate doesn't win

After months and months of election news, it's hard to believe that it's all going to be over tomorrow night, isn't it? (That is, unless we don't have another hanging-chad debacle.) I've had people, on both sides of the political spectrum, tell me they're worried about feeling down--even depressed--if their candidate loses. Quite frankly, I'm worried too, so I sleuthed out some tips for all of us ...

****
If you're like me, you've been a fiend for election news, obsessed with polls and probably have a political bumper sticker on your car or maybe a sign in your front yard. If you're a better person than me, you've probably even signed up to campaign for your candidate. I think, in some way, we've all been touched by the election season. And if our candidate wins, it's like a really long wait for Christmas and then a big celebration. If he loses, it's like Santa skipped your house.

Here are even more worrisome things we should stop fretting over this very second.

The post-election blues are totally normal and quite expected, says Rebecca Roy, a Southern-California-based psychotherapist. And when your guy loses, here's how to deal (without having to move to Canada):

It's OK to be angry, but not for long. "Take the time to acknowledge your anger or resentment," she says. "Then let go of it. It will not help you in the long run and can actually damage you emotionally and physically. If you simply cannot stomach the idea that your candidate didn't win, ask yourself how you have dealt successfully with other losses in your life. Whether it's physical exercise, venting to friends or just finding a way to get to a place of acceptance, do it as soon as you feel you can."

Reach "across the aisle." "The best way to let go of anger when your candidate doesn't win is to reach across the aisle," she says. "Nothing is solved by holding onto grudges, and what is done is done. Find a way to help out in your community, come together with others who have a different point of view and give them a chance to air it. You may be surprised at what you learn."

Choose to be at peace. "...It isn't the event that defines who we are, but how we respond to it. You can make the choice to be angry and resentful, or you can make a choice to be positive and make a difference despite your personal feelings." (Find peace within yourself with these helpful tips.)

Are you worried about how you'll feel if your candidate loses? And if you were a Kerry supporter during the last election, how did you feel when he lost? No biggie or big-time bummer?

Oh goodness, I am already going crazy and there is still another day. I've been doing everything I can to stay away from politics, but i just can't. I'm always drawn back into Keith or Rachel or my local folks. If my guy (Barack) doesn't win, I just don't know what I will do. I know I would cry and not want to come to work for the rest of the week. It feels personal for me at this point. I've invested time and money into the campaign and if *we* lose, I would be so devastated. I'm trying to find ways to feel good about a McCain presidency so that if he wins,I won't feel so bad...LOL.

I'm preparing for it, but I still have high hopes. If McCain doesn't win, I'll wait to see what the National Black Republican Association says, and I'll also give Osama 1 year to prove himself. If he doesn't, then prepare for him to be slandered to hell like Bush was.

I don't get angry or depressed if my candidate loses. I will be upset to have an inexperienced, socialist president who started running for the presidency 143 days after he became a US Senator. He is WAY too left for me. Had Hillary been the Demo nominee and if she had won, I wouldn't feel this way if my candidate loses. I have a lot of convictions for my set of values which I see going down the toilet in a BHO-Biden-Pelosi- Reed regime. God help us over the next four years.

I needed this advice 8 years ago, and then again 4 years ago. Actually, I was fortunate enough to be able to move to another country for 5 years during the Bush administration. Saved me a lot of heartache especially since I lived in England, where they hate Bush as much as I do. One newspaper headline in London after the election of 2004 was "How can 50 million Americans be so stupid?" I'm not sure what I'll do if McCain wins. My mother is threatening to move to Canada. Maybe I'll go with her. I shudder to think what 4 more years of Republican government will do to this country and our relationship with the rest of the world.

Anyone who is depressed over an election simply tells you that they are complete and total losers to begin with. I pray Obama loses, but if he wins I will not be depressed. However, he is an unexperienced, socialistic, flaming left wing moonbat liberal, who has 51% of the country fooled with his empty rhetoric. If Mccain loses, god help this country because the ride is finally over. Superpower status gone, liberal tax and spend democrats going wild. I can say I told you so!!!!

This is in response to "Disgruntled". Too bad you came back to this country because we don't want you or your "type" here. You, your mother, Obama, Biden, are the reasons this country is heading down the toilet so quickly. You liberal "weirdo" San Francisco type people are ruining this once great country, so GET OUT and STAY OUT!!! Americans who love God and Country don't want you here to begin with. Please, get out and stay out. You are all liberal weirdos who will never understand!
