How to Work Out...Without Knowing It

By Laurel House

Not in the mood to workout? That’s okay. Unbeknownst to you, everyday you are burning loads of calories just by going about your day- running errands, doing chores, hanging out with your girlfriends and having a good laugh, and best yet- having sex, even kissing. By being aware of your out and about calorie burn, I’d bet you’d take your daily activities up a notch.  In fact, those who wear a pedometer take more steps than those who don’t. Why? Awareness.

Kendell Hogan, an ExerciseTV trainer, is a big proponent of non-traditional “exercise” to rack up burned calories without breaking a sweat. While a full on workout is obviously important to get your heart rate up (which means that you are getting a full on fat-burning cardio workout) even the little things add up when it comes to keeping your weight down. Try Kendall’s “Anytime Exercises” mini workout below

So what Non-Workout Ways can Up your Calorie Burn?

Kendell suggests:

-Kiss… a lot. Passionate kissing is actually a great way to burn calories. Sex turns up the heat even more, singing hundreds of calories during an intense romp in the sheets.

-Laugh Out Loud. Laughing, I’m talking about big, open mouth, tears-streaming-down-your-face, belly laughing is a major calorie burner. How major? 10-15 minutes of solid laughter can burn as many as 50 calories!

-Take the Stairs. When you take the stairs instead of the elevator you are engaging your quads, hamstrings, calves and butt. Just set a limit as to how many flights are acceptable so you don’t get too crazy. Kendell has a 5 flight personal limit.

-Park Far. Find a parking space far away from the front door. Particularly when going to the gym, people! The walk from your car can be considered your warm-up. Multi-task!

-Curl your Purse. Do curls when you are carrying something- grocery bags, books, even just your purse counts for something. And for those of you who tote your life in your handbag, a simple set of purse curls can count for a lot!

-Dip off your Chair. Tricep Dip off your chair at work to tone your triceps.

-Calf Raises. Stand up and do Calf Raises while talking on the phone. It’s an easy way to both stretch and strengthen your leg muscles.

-Do Laundry. Just the motion of moving your laundry from the washer to the dryer, then folding and hanging your clothes is a great way to burn a few extra calories during the day. Amp it up by hanging one shirt at a time, forcing you to walk back and forth over and over.

-Lunge through the Park. While walking through a park or even just down a long hallway, add a few walking lunges. You will still get where you need to go, you will just activate your quads, abs, butt, and hamstrings while you’re at it.

So if you don’t have time to squeeze in an hour of cardio today, Kendell reminds us that you don’t have to do something contrived- like going to the gym, to workout. Just move. “If you’re doing something that makes you engage your muscles and use your cardio system, you are burning some calories and therefore burning some fat too."

Oh please! If house work made you more buff, then the cleaning ladies of America would be in beauty pageants. Yeah every little bit helps, but it only helps a little bit.

There is NO WAY sex burns hundreds of calories, when walking at 3.3 on the treadmill, at an incline for 2 miles burnes only like 150 calories. Why do people need to tell flat out lies in these posts?

if you dont think sex burns hundreds of calories, you're not doing it right lol jk, but a good "romp" can leave every limb of your body sore, you just gotta switch up positions and things

idk how many calories sex burns, but, erm, I'm not doing it because I want a work out, I'm doing it because I like it, and I think that's the point. LOL! You like sex, and it does burn calories - there for it's a double WIN!! =)

Sauce, you have that exactly right! Get on top for a while, it works your legs. Do it doggy style and mimic push-ups in rhythm!

Also, get out and do some yard work! I recently moved to The South after being an apartment liver in a large Midwestern city for my entire adult life...I thought I'd get out of shape since I'm not hoofing it to public transit, but, as my man and I clean up our yard and I'm dragging tree limbs to the brush pile and weed-whacking around the property, I can feel a difference! Plus, for the first time EVER I was complimented by a friend that I look really healthy and athletic, and I've always been told I'm so "skinny!" Housework CAN be a calorie burner, just put on some fun music and dance around while you do it!

I've never been a gym person, but I want to stay toned, so I really try and make day to day activities do double-duty, and it's working better for me than even a personal trainer did. But hey, to each her own!

When I am cooking, cleaning, mopping, etc. I usually sweat a lot! Some days an hour and a half of cleaning totally qualifies as my cardio workout for the day.

if you need to sneak in exercise, then you're working too hard. live a life that lets you be healthy or you're wasting your time on earth. unless of course you prefer to work 12 hours to make the big bucks every day, then yes, try to find ways to sneak stuff in.

Ms K obviously you are not doing it right! Sure if you are lying there like a dead fish you are not going to burn very many calories having sex. I know when I get it on with my man I sweat even more than at the gym sometimes ,depending on the position! After a good session my leg and arm muscles sure are sore!!!

Also to Lucky, I think you missed the point of the article, housework is not suppossed to be your only form of exercise, this article is about how to get EXTRA exercise into your day to burn a few hundred more calories a day.

To the poster, these are GREAT tips, I am going to try to purse curls since I carry my life in my purse!

Great ideas! After all the hype from TIME magazine about losing weight and exercise, I think that it's all about "everything in moderation". We've came to adapt ourselves into sedentary lifestyles that require us to have hours of extreme exercises instead of physical activities throughout the day. It's just like how dieticians keep advising us to divide our meals throughout the day :)
