I'm thin, but I eat

I started a new job about a month ago & it's been a fairly stressful change for a number of reasons.  One reason is that for the last five years I've worked in the fitness industry where there was a certain level of knowledge about health and fitness that most people had acquired.  Now I'm on a management team for a recreation center that's opening up in September, but unlike in the past, I'm the ONLY ONE who has ever worked in a recreation center setting before.  So, while I'm used to being surrounded by health-conscious individuals, now I'm surrounded by people who want to be healthy, but don't really know what healthy looks like.

I'm not really complaining about this, I'm just stating the difference, because I'm happy to help others if they want it, the real problem is that there seems to be an assumption among my coworkers that the reason that I'm thin is because I deny myself food--not because I eat right and work out.

Every day I bring my lunch to work.  My "feeding schedule" is such that I eat a big breakfast, a light lunch, a snack, & then at night I have 2-3 more small meals.  My daily calorie consumption usually sits somewhere between 2500-3000 calories.  Trust me, I'm not denying myself food.  But what my coworkers see is that I'm not going out to eat at lunch & my meals usually consist of veggie burgers, low-sodium V8, and fruit.  They don't see the multiple meals I eat at night or the big breakfast in the morning.  On days when I say I'm feeling a little tired, I've heard comments like, "maybe you aren't eating enough."  And they're constantly making remarks about how thin I am, but it's not in a complimentary tone. I don't really understand this perspective at all.  I'm not a rail.  I'm thin, but I'm healthy and athletic & muscly--why are they making comments about my diet and size?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated...

I have the same problem. I have always been very small, 5'2" about 99 to 103 lbs. I have heard the most hateful comments made to me by people that don't even know me. And I love food!! All types of food, I just can't eat a lot at one sitting. I eat throughout the day and I work out, but I'm not a work out ahololic...made 15-30 mins every couple days. Don't worry what people say, just remember that you are who God made you to be and that is a beautiful person.

I've never had such harsh comments, but I am starting to notice some more remarks. Recently I've had friends telling me "well just get off your diet for once" or "that's all you're going to eat, wow" or "how do you even stay full". The truth is I'm on NO diet whatsoever and I actually do stay full, stuffed in fact! The difference now is that I'm eating healthy, nutrient dense foods, I'm not snacking on chips & coke, and I really try to watch what goes in my body. I haven't really cut back on calories I probably eat at least 2,000 calories a day (if not more), and I'll eat like 6 times a day too. Most of the comments, especially on your part, probably come from a feeling of insecurity from those people. They're angry at themselves but will take it out on you. Since most of the comments come from my friends I use it as a time to "educate" them on what I'm doing and how really once you put it into practice and make it a lifestyle it gets easier to eat healthy. So maybe you can do that too! I'm sure you're a wonderful example on how to live a healthy life!!! Good luck with your situation, hope it gets better.

Oh and I'm in NO way rail thin, but I have been losing alot of weight, trying to get to a healthier weight... so that's probably why people are starting to comment.

They're making comments b/c they're jealous. I have a similar problem--to the point that the bitches spread a rumor that I have an eating disorder. I have a lot of muscle but wear a size 2. I eat a lot b/c I'm busy. I work two jobs, am back in college for a second degree, have two kids, run and do strength training. I've just realized that women are just that way. Unfortunately, instead of supporting each other, we cut each other down (of course, behind backs). Just take care of yourself and ignore them (which I know is hard).

i bet the people talking are over weight women. It makes them feel better to look at your style of eating a a bad thing so they don't feel bad having the burger and fries. i'm sure its annoying but don't sweat it, especially if their just co workers.

I think they are making those comments because they are jealous. I'm not that thin, i'm a healthy size 8 and people tell me how "lucky" I am to be small. I just say to them that luck has nothing to do with it, I ride my bike to work instead of driving and I eat lots of fruit and veggies. Yes i do eat some bad things but i've finally found how to do that whole moderation thing. Just don't worry, I know it's hard, but as long as your happy who cares what they think.

I'm in the same boat. I'm 27 years old. For as long as I can remember, I've always been aware of what I was putting into my body. A few years back, after extensive research I decided to go "semi-vegan" as I call it. This means I do not consume anything from mammals; no mammal meat or dairy products. A a "semi-vegan" still eat tons of fish, crustaceans and eggs. It's frustrating because people don't understand that I fuel my body with healthy options that have nutrional value instead of fried, processed, artificial foods that only do harm. Co-workers and friends have gone as far as to confront my parents about my eating habits which has lead to more than one lecture about how I "need to eat something". arghh! I do eat!! Alot and frequently! It's just not fast food, junk food and candy. I hate always having to defend my lifestyle.
