Life Is Hard--Rest Up!

user

We all know what happens when you don’t get enough sleep. Rest is essential for a healthy and balanced life...so let's review some good ways to get rest, fast! They'll come in handy not only as we head into the frenetic pace of the holidays, but year-round.

If you don’t fall asleep the minute your head hits the pillow, add precious minutes to your slumber time with these bedtime tips:

Turn off the TV—an active mind can lead to restless sleep.
Save controversial discussions or other stimulating activities for morning.
Practice deep, mindful breathing to slow down your body.
Take a warm bath or do some light reading (but don't read in bed, which can keep you from sleeping later).
Drink a glass of warm milk.
Get regular exercise—just not too close to bedtime.

As far as physical conditions, be sure you have the right pillow—soft for stomach sleepers, medium for side sleepers or firm if you snooze on your back. Keep the temperature cooler than you would in the daytime and wear an eye mask to block out that blinding streetlight. Or try room darkening shades.

Wow...it seems like a lot of work just to get to sleep! But if you can grab even a few more minutes every day, you'll be more alert, more prepared and more ready to tackle life as it comes your way.
