Life with Cancer: C-Section or natural child birth?

Hi guys! Its Erin's very pregnant sister Melissa. Erin wanted me to start off my telling you that she did not read this prior to posting--she usually likes to edit me (on my printed Christmas cards last year I wrote Mery Christmas--whoops!--she was the only one that noticed by the way).

Exactly two weeks from today is my scheduled c-section. I am beyond excited but I'm also positive I'm going to go into labor before then. I wouldn't care too much if I did (I have been ready for weeks now) except I promised my Dr. that I would try a natural delivery if I went into labor on my own. Having a baby naturally is not something I really want to do. With my son Andrew I was induced at 35 weeks so I could start treatment for Hodgkin's Lymphoma. The induction was not very successful and after two days of labor (and only getting to 4 centimeters) I had him via c-section. I know 35 weeks is very early so he was definitely not ready to come out and this time could be totally different but I really have no interest in even trying. Does that make me less of a women?

Maybe--but after beating cancer twice I feel like my body has been through enough. I had an easy recovery with the c-section the last time and I know this time could be different (I am 5 years older) but at least I know what to expect. What do you guys think? Should I try and go natural (Erin still hasn't told her story but believe me--it wasn't pretty) or stick with the c-section? I would love to hear from someone who has been through both. Thanks guys!!

Childbirth is hard either way. I have experienced both, with the C section by far being the worse. Mine was emergency since my son was too large to fit throught my pelvis and I had a whole host of post surgery issues, so I was adamant about trying natural with my daughter. Her birth was easy breazy baby! I thought I had a handle on this child birthing stuff when my third child was ready to make an appearance. He was born natural, but I had a long labor and the placenta attached to the old C section scar, making it necessary to have a D&C after delivering an 8 pound baby! YIKES! But, not to be outdone, I tried again...yep, Im crazy and with my youngest daughter, barely needed pain meds.

Moral to this story...every birth experience is different. Do whatever makes you feel comfortable and whatever is in the best interest for you and the baby. The end always justifies the means...and once you have the bundle of joy in your arms, all will be forgotten. Don't make yourself a martyr and go through natural child birth because someone else pressures you to. Besides, you don't want to end up cropping yourself out of the baby first photos, now do you? :)

I had both...first one natural and second C-section. I much prefer the natural. Even though there was pain (no meds and not by choice and several complications) I found it to be the quickest recovery other than a sore tush. The C-section carries so many more risks and the recovery is more difficult in comparison. Good luck and congratulations on licking CA.

Every single one of my birthing experiences was different.

My first son was natural. I went into labor and was not progressing. My Dr broke my water and told me that he would be back in a few hours. Fifteen minutes after he left, the nurse came in to check me...She said THERE IS THE HEAD!!! No time for meds...

My second son was diagnosed with gastroschisis. I was told that I would likely have a Csection - because of his exposed bowel. We wanted to avoid any possible trauma to his exposed bowel. At 33 weeks I went into labor, I was dilated 6cm and he was breech. An Emergency Csection was done. The delivery was so much easier.. As, I was numb and jusy laid on a table. But, the recovery was a bit painful.

My twins were my last delivery. Since I had a prior Csection, my Dr didnt want to do a VBAC. Plus, the pregnancy was twins and I was high risk. At 36 weeks, I delivered them via planned Section. The delivery...smooth as cake for me.. The recovery, was HORRID! I required transfusions, I had a HUGE blood clot under the incision spot that solidified.. and so much more..

    Ugg..

Basically... Do what you and your dr deem the right thing for you and your child. =-) Good luck and congrats

I'm a Midwife, that has done out of hospital natural births for mom's who have had cancer, including two that had cancer during the pregnancy. You can do anything you want. Often a woman choses a relaxed natural birth out of the hospital after doing through such trauma with tons of medical attention. No matter what a doc will carry on as though you are high risk becasue of your cancer, however, giving birth in the hosptial or by another c/section is not the answer to a life giving process.

My first one was natural, 2nd c-section. I had to do c-section because my 1st gave me a 4th degree tear, which is why my doctor did a c-section the 2nd time around. Now I'm also 36 weeks w/my 3rd and I wish I can do natural again because recovery was alot easier to deal with. But because of the 4th degree tear, I can't :(

    Go Natural!

For me having twins naturally was a whole lot easier than my c-sec with my last.

My first child I delivered vaginally - 60 hours after my water broke, including almost 3 hours of pushing!! Needed the vacuum to help get her out. (shoulder dystocia) She wasn't breathing, but thankfully, is a happy, healthy almost 10 year old. It was a HORRIBLE experience and RECOVERY!! I opted for c-sections with my other 2 children. One doctor said I should try another vaginal birth with my second since I worked so hard with my first. I asked, "Would it be better for me - or better for the baby?" He said that it would be better for me. No brainer for me. LOVED the c-sections!!! Recovery was MUCH better for me and there was no trauma for my other two. Other people have had different experiences, but trust in your decision and . . .

    Good Luck
