Losing steam on your walk? Mantras to get you going

You know those walks that begin with a glorious day of sunshine and warm breezes beckoning you to lace up your shoes, grab a water bottle and come outside? Those walks when you have just the right playlist in your ears and your feet just propel themselves lap after lap or block after block? Those walks when it is all going so well that you wonder why you aren't doing this every single day, when you feel healthy and happy and centered?

And then... And then, the winds shift. The mind wanders. The feet stop. And that perfect walk fizzles into a puddle on the side of street and you are left with no more steam, no more energy and no more interest in taking one more single step. What then?

I loved the solution presented in this Prevention fitness tip about creating and repeating mantras when your motivation is lagging and your walk has (almost) come to a complete halt. They've outlined our mantras to steal or inspire you to scribble out your own.

I think I'll personally pocket the "I love myself. I am proud of myself" to replace the negative "I can't go one more block" or "I am in the worst shape ever" that have the power to slow down the feet like nothing else. Plus, doesn't it feel good to repeat that kind of positive, self-loving stuff at any point you (or your life) has lost footing?

What are the mantras that get you moving?

This is going to sound really REALLY silly, but there was a Christmas cartoon "special" when I was a kid, with a song that went "Put one foot in front of the other, And soon you’ll be walking cross the floor,

Put one foot in front of the other, And soon you’ll be walking out the door." I sing it in my head when I start running out of steam, and it seems to help.

Closet Librarian, I love that! It isn't silly (OK, maybe a little), but it works so who cares!? Those jingle writers probably never anticipated they'd be helping adults get healthy decades down the line!
