Meet an Inspirational Runner

I wanted to share the story of Joseph Kenney, a runner from Omaha, NE who suffers from Restless Leg Syndrome. Joseph wrote to Shape about the importance of setting and achieving goals and overcoming obstacles.

"I have always been amazed at the incredible power of goal setting. I've accomplished far more than I ever believed possible and I ascribe my success to the deliberate process of thinking through every aspect of my runs, and then developing a detailed, written road map to get me to where I wanted to go.

I've had countless challenges in my life and a laundry list of why running is out of the question for me. I've suffered greatly from a little know disorder known by some as RLS or Restless Leg Syndrome. Over the past two years I set my sights on running ultra distances to help raise awareness for this cause. In September of 2007, all alone and in the dark of the night, I set out on a 50 mile run. I finished in 8 hours and 54 minutes. In September of 2008, I set my goals even higher and again in the dark of the night, I ran 75 miles in 14 hours.

These runs were incredibly challenging as I focused putting one foot in front of the other; I couldn't think about the finish. This isn't dissimilar to living a night with RLS. Severe sufferers live minute by minute and need to remain focused throughout the long dark nights.

I'm always amazed by super-marathon runners. I high five this guy because the most I've ever run was about 8 miles outdoors and I had to stop to cross a river. I run 5 miles most days and cross train on the eliptical, I just can't imagine running for 8 hours. I'd LOVE to try it though. I think you really need some major inspiration like this guy has, or like Karnazes (sp?)-his sister died tragically when they were both young and he says that's what keeps him motivated. True inspirations.

God bless him. This is my first time to read about RLS. What are the causes of RLS?

My hubby is always getting on me on keeping my legs still when we are in bed, but it is uncontrollable. Constant twitching and tremors, and the inability to lay still. Man o man, it is frustrating.
