New Marathon Runner- Help a Reader Out

user

I must be crazy.... but I've been inspired to run in the Chicago Marathon next year. I seriously need some advice though. I run now, 5 times a week, but usually only 3 miles at a time. I have a training schedule from Nike, but would love to have some advice from either fellow trainers or current marathoners.

More specifically, what kind of foods should I be eating or not eating? Should I treat this training as a regular diet (no sugars, low fat, etc) or do I need to eat certain foods in order to maintain some balance? What can I look forward to in the weeks ahead? I have a full year to start training so is that enough or should I plan to do it the year after? Any kind of gear or clothing I'm going to need?

Any help or advice would be appreciated, thanks!
