Nutrients Depleted by Common Pharmaceutical Drugs

Move over Rolaids and Tylenol.  Step aside Tums and Seldane.  If you spell relief D-R-U-G-S, you might want to consider the effects of doing so.

First there are the obvious side-effects of drugs. The pharmaceuticals that millions of people turn to for relief from pain, inflammation, and other symptoms are not only causing side effects, they are actually damaging the health of many people. Drug side effects are the third leading cause of death. By some estimates six thousand people die every year from "simple" non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). These commonly-used drugs can contribute to congestive heart failure, kidney disease, suicidal depression, cataracts, ulcers, macular degeneration, hearing loss, tinnitus, memory loss, fatigue, liver disease, and many other health concerns.

Prescription and over-the-counter medications can also deplete your body of much-needed vitamins and minerals required for your body's basic functions. Over-the-counter pain relievers like Aspirin, Advil, Aleve, Tylenol, and the countless others on the market can deplete your body of Vitamin C, folic acid, iron, zinc, and other essential nutrients. These nutrients are needed to keep your immune system strong, heal tissues, maintain cellular integrity, build healthy blood, heal wounds, and nourish skin and hair.

Here are some of the common types of drugs and the nutrients that they often deplete:

Thanks for the info. I am on "chemical life support" so I need to look more closely at the impact of all of my meds. The good news is that I'm stil able to get around under my own power, and pretty well at that.

Incidentally, taking certain vitamins and supplements can counteract a medication or potentiate it (make its effects more potent). If you are on any "maintenance" medication, NEVER take a vitamin, herbal, or dietary supplement without checking first with your doc and your pharmacist. The same goes for discontinuing a vitamin, herbal, or dietary supplement.

Fabulous article! As I'm reading it, I'm realizing the connections...I have been having cold symptoms and so I added taking zinc and vitamin C to counteract the deficiencies, and your article made me realize that I had been taking ibuprofen recently for neck pain...which clearly caused the deficiencies of both bringing on cold symptoms. Wow! This ones a keeper! I look forward to reading more informative articles from you here. Thanks so much!

my doctor had told me years ago that coffee was depleting the iron out of my system. also, recently I found out protonix was doing the same thing from him. you should look into more drugs.

Wonderful article! I'm fortunate enough for now to be in excellent health and med free (including no birth control) at 44 and I only take Advil when I'm having my period or if I have a really bad headache (which is rare). I'm all for keeping one's body as healthy as possible. Thanks for this info.

my gyn gave told me to take a woman's multivitamin along with my birth control to counteract vitamin/mineral depletion.

because i'd much rather have my vitamins depleted than my sanity by having any more kids!!

I agree with you chrissyr I'd much rather take my birth control with the side effects then have more kids. I'd also rather get rid of migraines and take the side effects from what I take for that then be in my bed for 10-12 hours unable to do anything from the pain.

We live in a drug culture. It's tragic. Most of my friends pop pills like crazy and if they have any problem, they go to the doctor for more pills. Truth is, most of the stuff people pop pills for can be changed with diet and lifestyle. Truth is, these drugs are harmful to our bodies when used regularly.

I try to avoid pills as much as possible. Sure, sometimes it's necessary. I got pneumonia last year and antibiotics saved my life. Thank goodness for modern medicine, but it should not be a daily thing. We shouldn't pop pills for headaches, acid reflux, sleeping problems, etc. We should address the source.

CHRISSY and MO: Don't take offense to this as it's just a suggestion, but why don't you ask your husband's to get vasectomies? It seems to me that it's only fair since you both went through childbirth more than once. I don't mean to be harsh, but I never understood why women just take this BC role like there are no other options. My hubby uses a condom and previous LTR's have too. Just a thought...... :-)

    JOY: YES, SO TRUE!!

another hockey fan, husband and i are actually working on saving up for a vasectomy right now. we cannot afford insurance through his work, they keep raising costs. so until we have the money saved up (probably early next year with tax returns) i am on birth control. that is my choice though. i felt it safer, and more enforcable in "heated" moments, than condoms. and it is more cost effective at the moment.
