Oh my darlin' (clementine)

Summer fruit gets a lot of glory, and for good reason. Let's face it, melon is amazing! But the best part about eating fruit in the winter is that, except for pineapples, you don't have to cut it up. Everything is hand-friendly and comes in its own wrapper. And while the crates at the grocery store are brimming with lots of zesty citrus (ha! sorry) in a variety of colors, pummelos and obscenely gigantic grapefruits, it is the wee clementine that has my undivided devotion. Seedless, easy to peel, practically no pith, clementines are happy-go-lucky and ready to please your tummy. They are just as packed with vitamin C as the boring navel orange, but about a million times more flavorful. Sometimes when I'm dashing out the door, I'll grab four or five and walk into work with my pockets bulging. It's all worth it, though, as I dole them out throughout the morning and whenever I think a dark or stressful thought, I'll reach for a little baby orange and that first peel of skin releases a burst of aromatherapy that instantly brightens my mental state. Plus, then I get to eat the tiny sections. Win-win-win! And believe me, if you want to impress the heck out of your party guests this holiday season, section out a dozen clementines, toss with pomengranate seeds and you just created the easiest and most sophisticated fruit salad imaginable.

Enjoy these other exotic and fabulous winter fruits!

Do yourself a favor and grab a box of clementines this weekend. They're handy to nosh, can be used to make amazing dishes (like this flourless clementine cake) Besides, you can reuse the box in a variety of ways and you can even create these amazing little clementine candles using only the peel and some olive oil. Sure, a navel orange could probably pull that off too, but it definitely wouldn't look as adorable.

I love those things! I buy them all the time, and since they are so easy to peel I actually eat them, unlike the wasted regular oranges I've thrown away over the years. But make sure you get the seedless kind. Once I bought a huge box of them and they had seeds. Until then I thought they were all seedless.

Clementines = Christmas!!! I was raised on a farm (that had apples, pears, grapes, everything BUT citrus) and don't like candy much. Every Christmas I would dig through all the candy, etc. to get to the clementine that was always in the toe of the stocking!!! Love them!
