Oprah feels like a failure because she weighs 200 pounds

oprah-cover.jpg
The big news today is that Oprah has gained weight. Not just gained weight. She claims that she now weighs 200 pounds. She stands on the cover of her magazine, next to a thinner version of herself, looking at her former body apologetically, hiding in a freaking jogging suit, as though the approximation of workout wear lessens the blow.
"I'm embarrassed," she writes. "I can't believe that after all these years, all the things I know how to do, I'm still talking about my weight. I look at my thinner self and think, 'How did I let this happen again?"' (Source)
I haven't read the whole article, only snippets leaked early to AP, but what I have read seems to amount to self-flagellation. She whimpers about not setting a good example, and uses the words "failure," "disappointing" and "fat cow."

What do you think about Oprah's vegan diet?

How sad is it that the richest woman in show business, arguably one of the most inspiring success stories for anyone who has ever tried to start something from nothing, is measuring her successes by the stupid number on a scale? How sad is it that an arbitrary number like "200" would be the knell of failure? And what kind of example is she setting now for people who are, say, 200 pounds or more, and now have just been told by Oprah that their weight is a "failure" or "disappointing."

Promise me something this week: you will not weigh yourself. Not even once. You are not the sum of your parts. You are not your fat ass. You are you. You are your accomplishments. You are the amazing friendships that you have built around you. You are amazing. And don't let Oprah tell you otherwise.

It's time to shut up already with the self hating!

OOOoo.... Oprah I'm dissapointed in you. Thats a shame. Talking about her self that way.

So if 200 pounds equals a fat cow then? I'm tired of these big girls feeling sorry for thereselves.

I'm 225 and men love me. No joke, no bull. It's all in your attitude.

I'm sorry Oprah, whether you like it or not, you r a role model. Not just to black women, but to ALL women.

S--t let me be the 200+ role model, I'll have you ladies feeling good.

let oprah feel what she needs to feel so she can find the motivation to change it. i too have yo-yoed some (due to pregnancies etc) and it is very frusterating to work that hard to achieve something and turn around in a year or two to see all that hard work gone. starting all over is a very daunting task. but it starts with you looking at yourself honestly and saying, i'm failing myself, i need to change this. i'm supporting you oprah!!! let's do this together!!!!!!!

I think it's really killing her that she might be a "regular" person. All that fame, money, power and prestige hasn't done a thing to change her who she is on the inside.

I can kind of see Oprah's point. She is worth over 1 Billion and has all the resources possible available to her and she still let herself go.It is shameful. I mean she does have her pick of personal trainers, chefs, exercise equipment, time, etc. I would be ashamed too.

I don't think Oprah feels disappointed in the fact that she's gained weight (at least not completely). She's disappointed in the fact that she let herself go, she stopped eating healthy is what I read and that is why she gained weight therefore that is why she feels guilty. I'm sure that had she gained weight while still eating well, she wouldn't be calling herself a failure. It's natural for weight to fluctuate but 200 pounds is by no means healthy for a woman her size. It's a matter of self-respect and all she's saying is that she's lost that in herself.

I think you should go read the whole article.

I'm really not a big fan of O, however I think she has a point in her article. It's not about the weight - it's about living a good life and being healthy so that you can be all you can be everyday.

Oprah started to gain weight in direct relation to the abuse at the girls school in Africa. She is an activist for protecting children. Food has been her drug in dealing with this, she is also a survivor, and may have used food to numb her feelings as a child. She has gone public because she recognizes she has a problem and is ready to seek help. HAVE MERCY!

I, like all of America, have watched Oprah lose and gain many pounds over the years. No matter what, she is honest and does her best to present herself as attractive. Her triumphs and disappointments have been shared with everyone and I can only say that she is a beautiful woman inside and out no matter what she weighs.

I think she looks fine now. When she gets too skinny, her head looks like it is gonna tip right over.
