Period cravings: Science says I can have candy

I'm not, by nature, a chocolate lover. A chocolate liker, sure, but love is a strong word, a word I reserve solely for sour gummy type candy.

Confession out of the way, there is a certain time of the month that I would make sweet confectionery love to chocolate if only it would hold me afterward. That time is slightly before my Aunt Flo comes to visit. For a long time I thought that cravings were just mental, that somehow I got the idea of some sort of snackeroo in my mind and thusly wanted it with every fiber of my being. But, my lack of enthusiasm for chocolate during the other three weeks of the month got me thinking that there might be something biological to cravings after all.

I love science! It's the best enabler EVER! Apparently, sugar cravings are a totally normal part of PMS. I like to think my bitchy alter-ego stays restrained, but I can only do so much to restrain my inner chocolate lover. The changes in hormones that happen when you're prepping for your period can cause low insulin levels, and those cravings are just your body's way of saying, Give me some more fuel, willya, Toots! Okay, yeah, that fuel could probably be anything, and doesn't have to be chocolate, but I'd like to keep my social conditioning, thank you very much.

For the sake of full disclosure, the hormone-insulin level relationship is just a theory. Another theory is that chocolate (or your sweet food of choice) releases serotonin, which makes you happy, happy at a time you may otherwise want to spew venomous rage at anything or anyone in your path. I say chocolate is better than manslaughter, at least in my world.

Take these tidbits of PMS-candy-craving enablers as you will. As for me: now that I can explain my cravings for sugary-goodness at one point during the month, I'm now free to work on a theory to explain my weekly craving for Chinese take-out.

People seem to always critize women, regardless if you are fit or not. Chocolate evil, chocolate fattening.

Hello out there...there is such thing as moderation.

It depends on mood, satisfaction, craving, hormones, talk to your doctor. It's between you and him.

I don't want to hide just because I'm craving chocolate. The Aztec culture had the best idea.

I go from Chocolate to something salty and back again for at least a week before Aunt Flo's visit! It's insane, but I can't get enough of either of them.

Ladies, do what makes you feel good! If you workout hard there is no reason why you can't give in to sporadic indulgence!

DMLady - while you might not crave chocolate, you're craving the same thing. White potatoes are very high in starch, which turns very quickly to sugar in your body.

This isn't a new theory. Most women will crave some type of sweetness right before they start their period. It does have to do with the varying levels of hormones. Same thing happens to pregnant women.

My PMS cure - one soft peice of bread, slathered w/ peanut butter, and dark chocolate chips sprinkled on the PB. Then fold the slice of delight in half and devour. SOOOOO satisfying, gives my body what it's asking for, and if I count it in my daily calories, doesn't make me feel as guilty as, say, a giant bowl of Blue Bell Milk Chocolate ice cream.

    Mmmmm... ice cream....

i don't think she's saying eat as much as you can, its okay! I think shes saying you can have that piece of chocolate and not try to workout extra hard or feel guilty about it. Its up to you how much you eat and how much self control you have.

I eat the whole day right before i get my period, anything i can get my hands on. I love food, and i usually have a balanced diet (including chocolate whenever the crave hits me). But the day right before Aunt Flo, I cannot stop stuffing my face. It's nuts. My friends say they do the same thing. NOne of us have weight issues, and we like to look healthy. So one day a month of gorging is absolutely fine. Now I have a scientific reason for that, go figure lol

And OPTIVA, noobdy is saying its ok to overeat. Men have no excuse. Women can enjoy that excuse for , oh, maybe 3 days a month. There is no need to go to the extremes, darlin.
