Putting an end to overnight anxiety: What your stress dreams are trying to tell you

http://robynslingsby.files.wordpress.com/2007/10/sleep.jpg
As if you aren't frazzled enough during the day, now you must deal with being chased by a tornado or haunted by a stalker while you're sleeping! Nearly one in three women has frequent anxiety dreams, according to a Self.com poll. Thankfully, you can use your reveries to your advantage. "Considering what the dream's metaphors represent to you can enhance your understanding of yourself, and clarify your feelings about a certain experience," says Milton Kramer, M.D., clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Suss out what could be bothering you and you'll have more peaceful nights (and days!) in no time.

Theme: unpreparedness

The dream "I'm back in high school and don't know which classes I'm supposed to go to, so I end up missing one—usually Mr. Westerman's world religions class. I become terrified about not knowing when the tests are, then finals come around and I wake up completely freaked out!" —Lori Huffman, 31, Houston

Variations You're rushing to catch a flight but haven't packed or can't find your ticket. A new mother may dream she can't find her baby.

What it means Dreaming about something you've already accomplished (i.e., graduating from high school) can mean you're scared to make mistakes in an area where you usually succeed. "Perfectionist people tend to have these sorts of dreams," says Kramer. One explanation is that you may be tying your self-worth too tightly to how you perform at work. If you usually spend hours fretting over an upcoming event or presentation, give yourself a set time to prepare and then force yourself to put it out of your head. "The outcome doesn't change by agonizing over it," assures Arthur Nezu, Ph.D., professor of psychology at Drexel University in Philadelphia.

Check out these fun ways to let loose (and stop stress!)

Theme: powerlessness

The dream "I'm walking in a dark alley, and I see a man in silhouette coming toward me—I know I'm about to be in a bad situation or robbed. As his hands reach out and get close to me, I try to scream, but nothing comes out." —Sarah Calderon, 34, New York City

Variation You're trying to run from something, but you can't move.

What it means"You may be facing a difficult decision," says Dr. Kramer. Express your concerns to trusted confidants so they're not bottled up, and try writing down the pros and cons of, say, changing careers.

Instant soothers for high-stress times: 7 easy ways to relieve anxiety.

Theme: natural disaster

The dream "I'm in a house in a rural neighborhood, I look out the window and see tornadoes forming and coming right at me. One will start tearing apart the house and I run to escape, but it follows me everywhere I go. If it disappears, another drops from the sky and chases me. I'm petrified, because all I can do is run." —Kathryn Berthume, 22, Los Angeles

Variations You're trying to escape a flood, or a tidal wave is about to overtake you, and you must save others.

What it means You're most likely feeling overwhelmed by an endless to-do list, mounting responsibilities or a constant stream of bad news. If you're trying to save others, it may be because feel responsible for their misfortune in some way, or feel the need to fix problems that aren't really yours, Kramer says. Until cloning is an option, prioritize: Before bed, make a to-do list and pick one thing you're going to focus on the next day; the rest will have to wait. Nezu also advises spending 15 minutes with your list coming up with alternate ways of crossing off the tasks. Can you send out the laundry and order a gift online instead of hitting the mall? By delegating and making small compromises, you'll be able to focus on the task at hand rather than what's waiting in the wings.

Fill your cart with stress-busting foods!

Theme: personal loss

The dream "I bite into something and my teeth start to come out. I spit them out and start crying because when I try to fit them back into my gums, they won't stay. After I wake up, I'm usually upset for hours." —Christina Carathanassis, 33, New York City

Variation Someone in your dream accidentally dies.

What it means You're likely worried about losing something, such as a job, relationship or even a personality trait (e.g., you take pride in your confidence but let your new boyfriend walk all over you). "Something like teeth are physically connected to you, so whatever they embody is of vital importance to your identity," Kramer explains. If you dream someone close to you or someone famous dies—say, Marilyn Monroe—think about what she represents for you, suggests Patricia Garfield, Ph.D., author of The Universal Dream Key (HarperOne). If you've always admired Monroe for her beauty, you could be anxious about losing yours with age. If your fears are warranted, talk to friends about how they handled a breakup or other loss. Having confidence you can cope will help you sleep better no matter what happens.

Theme: life interruption

The dream "I find myself inexplicably pregnant and alone. I'm in a hot location, like the desert, wandering around in a sundress before waking up sweaty and anxiety-ridden." —Alison McMahon, 23, Los Angeles

Variation You encounter a blockade while driving or traveling.

What it means Once you rule out a literal interpretation (e.g., a condom broke), consider what the pregnancy stands for: What has happened that might prevent you from reaching a goal? Maybe you got passed over for a promotion, and it's creating an impasse in your career path. A pregnancy could also mean you've been forced into a role you're not comfortable with, Garfield says, such as if you got the promotion but are uneasy about the new responsibilities. Brainstorm as many creative ways to get back on track as possible, Nezu suggests; this exercise will illustrate your choices and thus control, ultimately resulting in sweeter dreams.

Want to remember more dreams?

Telling yourself before you fall asleep that you want to recall your reveries helps, Dr. Kramer says. So does writing them down as soon as you wake up. But the best way to commit them to memory is sharing them right away and discussing what they might mean. I'm 38 and I still have the school dream. Most of my stress dreams involve being at work and either not being able to leave or arguing with one of the difficult customers. Like having to spend all day at work isn't bad enough!

I already knew I was a perfectionist and a control freak, so it does makes sense.

I was just thinking this morning about wanting to read a blog (or write one) about dreams!. Thanks. :)

I've had the pregnancy dreams before — suddenly realize I'm 9 months pregnant or ready for labor but realize I didn't ask off work; or know I HAD a baby, but can't find it; have a baby, but it's so small it can fit in my hand and then I lose it in a pool; go to the hospital to have a baby, but then realize I'm only a month or two pregnant

Haven't had the natural disaster or running dreams in awhile.

I've had really weird dreams lately — being sentenced to death and worried about needing to get things done — like contacting my mom or planning what I'll wear at my funeral — before having to sit in the electric chair (two nights ago), and being attacked by a terrorist who was trying to bite off my fingers (last night.)

Victoria: The writer mentions the silent screaming dream in the article above — The dream "I'm walking in a dark alley, and I see a man in silhouette coming toward me—I know I'm about to be in a bad situation or robbed. As his hands reach out and get close to me, I try to scream, but nothing comes out."

She said it means you might be facing a difficult decision (Yeah, I would not have figured that out on my own! :) I've had that dream before too, or I try to run, but I'm running in slow-mo.)

Disgruntled: I have the high school dreams too, and I've been out of high school for almost 11 years. I usually dream that it's late in the semester and I suddenly realize I haven't attended class at all and don't even know where or when it meets. I used to dream about my old job all the time, but I very rarely dream about my new job... Does that mean I don't relate well to my current job? I've been here for 2 years.

I hate the stress dreams-- some of my recurring ones are that I have to go back to high school because I find outthat I didn't actually graduate because I didn't have enough credits and all the same horrible classmates and teachers are STILL there. This is a terrible, terrible dream since I graduated 20 years ago and high school was the worst time in my life. Another one is that I have to be somewhere on time like for work or another event and I am running late and I can't get ready and it keeps getting later and later--I can't get my hair done right or find the correct clothes, or my car is out of gas or whatever. Another one I have had is where I am dreaming that I am at work and doing my job in my sleep and then I actually wake up and feel totally exhausted because it feels like I have been working all night long.

I have been split for 1 year from a 5 year relationship in which I was engaged. I still have dreams about him and our home in which she lives with him.The dreams are always of him telling me he does not love me anymore in one form or another...I wake up and am emotionally wrecked for hours. What can I do to change these dreams, or as I call them.. nightmares.

I wanted to comment on the general analysis of the discussion of dreams, and how they can have some effect on our real lives, in fact maybe some people have an awakening while dreaming, that has had such a profound effect on them, they changed their lives in a way that wasn't suppossed to be continued on their pathway down their lives.

Dreams I believe are connected to an indie individuals life-whethe it's anxiety involvement, depression, good moods, lively, active, athletic, boring, self-absorbed and I'll give one more-insecure.

I have become throughout my life a man that is able to express himself in a way that many men can't. Woman in my opinion are more affectionat in their physical attributes towards each other than a man's man. But, I feel it is ok for a man to show someone the way he is feeling. Because if he doesn't, it is possible, in his dreams, the demons come out, and an adutl nightmare which is totally different in every shape and form than what a child perceives as a nightmare, is still a dream in nature, yet feels more realistic.

Even I have constant chapters that I feel I could make a novel about. I always dream of the same people I was insecure to be friends with in HS. For some reason, in my subconscious, I suppose I was jealous of them. While they are in my dream, they are not active-they will be a room with me and my friends, and not say a word? To me, I feel there are issues that have never been solved. For me, I am determined that once I am a happier person in general, the feelings of rejection in the past, will slower wither away, and so, the people who are in my dream will die with them as well and not be so right there yet so distant from me when I dream of them.

I believe people have lucid dreams for I do probably 90% of the time. However I dispute the fact that when you know you are dreaming, you cannot partake in anything always from being a superhero, to being the smartest ethical, best looking, charming man. I have known several times I dreaming, and fear that the evil and scared little boy I was is going to come out, and all the things I was scared of will show up. Dreaming is a concept that I believe humans are not meant to define. It is something only a individual and that particular individual can exp for it is their subconscious that comes out during sleep, and not even the most brilliant scientists can partake in understanding another's destiny or worries, sadness, or happiness.

For the most part, my lucid dreams have not been good. I have felt pain, crippled, unable to fly when I try, and always seem last form the rest of the group when participation in any activities. I wonder why all the rejection, and hurt in my dreams always takes place back to HS, on the baseball field, where I once thought I would become a starting major league baseball player. When I say this, it's not because every kid imagined it, it's because I was genetically gifted and didn't take that to my advantage.

The weird part is that you can be or try to be who you want, when you are dreaming, but the reality is no matter how hard you try, even when you know when dreaming, that it is only a dream, sometimes, you still can not hold back that feeling of jealousy, loneliness, and ideally a sense that the world hates you. This is just the way I have as Ive grown throughout my years experienced my own dreams. There have been positive ones but the ones I remember are alwayss negative. Maybe because the reality is, I am not in a state of pure and utter happiness, and if you feel unsuccessful in he real world, it could play a role in your dreams, not fantasies. Dreams will never have a definitive meaning. But, I guess that is what makes it so special. Because it is the only time, that no one else but the person who is dreaming can truly accept how to interpret their connection between the real world, adn their dreams. So, in essense, although lucid as I have seen, I have not been able to fly sometimes, although others I have. I hae not been able to control my destiny. Maybe the power of confidence is the key control method on whether you can actually turn your dream into your own fantasy......Maybe.....That is what I think sometimes..and maybe one day, in my dream, I will look directly in the eye of the ones I was envious of, and smile and shake their end, and have closure and peace knowing that I wasn't someone who couldn'thave related to them, but moreso, at that time of my life, I was just an immature underdeveloped kid trying to look good for others, but not for himself internally.... "Are we really the dreamers, and the dreamers of our dreams." That is something that can't be debated, because god created humans to be different in some ways from one another, and it would be a losing battle to try to understand ethically, why dreams cause certain behaviors in characteristics of happy versus depressed people. I'mjust happy knowing that I am the only one capable of sharing and seeing my dreams...That will always be and never change....
