Secrets to workout success: Do you really need to stretch?

The time we designate to exercise is precious, particularly when we have commutes, carpools, cooking, and six-thousand other things to squeeze into our schedules. Every single moment, from jumping into your yoga pants to racing to the treadmill from the locker room, counts.

When I finally get to the actual exercise, I want to pack in as much sweating, calorie-burning, and de-stressing as I can into my thirty minutes or hour. I admit, that means I often breeze past or even skip stretching. I want to go and then I want to stop, making the few minutes it takes to ease my muscles in and out of the exercise seem like a big pain.

"The Biggest Loser" trainer Bob Harper says this is a mistake. Stretching to both warm up and cool down the muscles is critical for a successful workout. Here, Bob explains:

Biggest Loser - Bob's Workout Secret #2: Stretching @ Yahoo! Video

Instead of thinking of leaning against a tree to stretch my hamstrings as a tedious addition to my exercise, I love Bob's suggestion of doing yoga pre- and post-workout. By incorporating yoga poses into my routine (which I can do in my living room, or you might even be able to do on a mat in the corner of your gym), I can avoid injury, increase my flexibility, and maybe even burn a few extra calories. Plus, the calming nature of many yoga poses might just help ease my increased heart rate and transition me back to the rest of my day smoothly.

If you've been skipping the stretching before and after you exercise, here are six ways to get started with moves and poses that are geared for your favorite activity or lifestyle.

  • If you are a swimmer, these poses that focus on strengthening and stretching the hips, ankles, and shoulder blades pair well with breathing exercises that boost cardiovascular capacity and decrease stress.

Stretching is about life long health. You end up with serious medical problems, stiffness, pain, joint damage, if you don't stretch. I'm over 30 with kids and the girls around me (I work for a University) can't even touch their toes. They might be 12yrs younger than me, but I'm more flexible. It matters.

Even when I just go for a brisk walk, I stretch. Stretching just makes me feel great and it helps to prevent injury. I used to run, but just never got into it. Walking on the other hand, I love. It is the best exercise and overall toner for me as I am consistent and walk at least 30 minutes every day! My stomach is tighter, my legs and butt are more toned and I simply feel better. It does not require a gym membership, a trainer or equipment. I wear smartsole exercise insoles http://www.smartsole.com . They are anti cellulite insoles that help you tone muscles, increase circulation and cause you to burn more calories with every step. So you are getting a work out and toning your legs and butt even when just running errands.

I read about them in Prevention mag in an article on exercise shoes and they are a fabulous way to get toned for those of us with crazy schedules. They listed the code jm10 to save 10% off.

I have lost 40 pounds over the last 3 years and though not skinny, I am now in shape and toned and can wear a size 8 jeans. Toned, healthy and fit with curves is the goal!

I've read in many places that one shouldn't stretch unless they are already warmed up. Even most yoga routines have a warm up phase before they go into deep stretching.

The take away message here should be don't stretch until you warm up!

that's because you listen to all kinds of "experts"! Find some people with education, not just "personal trainer"
