Skip the Sleeping Pills -- These 6 All-Natural Herbs Can Ease Your Insomnia

You've probably been there: Tossing and turning at night, you pop a few Tylenol PMs. Sure, you nod off quickly, but the next day you can barely make it to the office in your semi-zombified state.

Next time you're having trouble getting to sleep, try out one of these herbals remedies -- way gentler than the chemical alternatives, but for many people, still effective.

Valerian root: It stinks, but it’s the most effective sleep-inducer of all herbal cures. You can find it in capsule, tea, tablet or liquid extract forms. Valerian root can also ease anxiety and muscle stiffness -- find out how.

Chamomile Tea: Drink a cup before hitting the sheets. Learn how chamomile tea can also help out with digestive problems, menstrual cramps and more.

Celery: Munch on some; it’s loaded with sedatives. We've got hundreds of recipes that use celery -- try one!

Lemon balm: It can be soothing and emit a pleasant scent.

Lavender: Take a whiff of lavender while taking a warm evening bath. It relaxes the nervous system, reducing stress hormones that often keep you awake. Lavender’s scent also ups the production of relaxing alpha waves in the brain for deeper sleep. If you get migraines, lavender can help with that too.

Hops: If your sleeping problems are connected to your period, hops can be useful because it balances out fluctuating hormone levels. Stuff a sleep sachet containing the herb under your pillow.

yea, hops might make your pillow smell like marijuana as a brewer I know how delicous they smell. The reason europe changed from brewing with yarrow and mugwort to hops was because the old hers were stimulants and like drinking redbull and vodka the people would be drunk and hyper, a bad combo. Hops made them nice and mellow.

This is silly "new age" babble! You obviously do not understand or "get" the issue of Sleep Disorders! They cannot be "cured" by Valerian root or lavendar. And, in fact, there really is no known cure for most sleep disorders as yet--though there has been much progress in the last 5 years.

A good book to read if you really want to understand sleep disorders is: "The Promise of Sleep" by William Dement. He was the chairman of the Stanford Sleep Laboratory and deciphered the meaning of REM sleep.

Please stop printing this drivel! It could be harmful! People with major sleep problems should consult a sleep clinic--not take herbs!

Have tried them all with little or no luck. Valerian root does the best job, but I find Melatonin to work faster. I need something to allow me to sleep through the night.

For me, nutmeg works better than the things on here that I've tried.

(Valerian root, lavender, chamomile and celery)

Couldn't agree more with you, fairyfair!!!! Drug interactions can be really serious. Even touching some herbs can cause interactions with your prescription drugs (the oils from the herbs can absorb through your skin)! Best thing to do is to do some research first with a medical professional.

You're very glib and reckless in your recommendation of chamomile and valerian root - there are negative aspects to both of these and the internet is full of cautionary tales about both of these "natural" products. In fact, serious side effects have occurred in some individuals who take either of these & there have been even more serious side effects when either or both of these are mixed with other herbal medications and/or pharmaceuticals.

Your idiotic links that are attached to each are totally useless and don't serve anything. I feel this entire article was written by some bimbo who's still in junior high.

Thanks for the tips. I didn't realize celery was loaded with sedatives. Good to know.
