The Brilliant New Way to Save Cash—and Extend Your Life

There's a common little habit that is burning a hole in your wallet and putting your body in serious danger.

If you’re still baking your bod at a tanning salon — despite all the scary-true stuff we've told you about how it turns your skin to leather, and worse — maybe this news will finally get you to change your ways. A major scientific report has just reclassified indoor tanning devices as “definitely carcinogenic.” Translation: Fake-baking definitely causes cancer, just like cigarettes do — and often at a much younger age. Not only that, if you start the skin-cooking habit before age 30, your risk of developing melanoma, the deadliest of the three forms of skin cancer, increases by an unbelievable 75 percent. Guess it’s no surprise that melanoma rates among young women have tripled since the 1970s.

So c’mon, time to stop torturing your skin. To give you extra incentive, we came up with a list of cool splurges you could enjoy if you weren’t shelling out $40 monthly to maintain a bronze glow:

The habit: Indoor tanning (20 minutes max time) three times a week

The cost: $40, on average (higher-end salons cost more, and some places offer special intro deals)

What you could have bought:

  • Four manicures
  • 13 lattes
  • A pretty, lacy bra
  • Burgers and beer for you and your guy at a neighborhood place
  • 40 songs downloaded onto your iPod
  • 4 pizza deliveries
  • The first round at happy hour for you and a group of coworkers

And if you swear it off for a whole year, you could buy:

  • 3 pairs of high-end skinny jeans
  • A Caribbean getaway or cruise
  • A Coach bag
  • 240 SPF-infused lip balms
  • 480 bottles of water
  • 2 bottles of Cristal
Do you still tan? If so, will you stop now that tanning beds are carcinogenic?
Also, what have you been cutting back on to save cash recently?

What MORONS still think that tanning is a good idea? Even if these SILLY HUMANS ignore the fact that it is extremely unhealthy, they are vain, so they should realize how UGLY it makes your skin in only a few short years. If you are a tanning fanatic in your 20s you will have much worse skin in your 30s (which you'll try to cover up with expensive lotions and make up). Even if you only care about how you look, tanning is a STUPID IDEA.

I was tanning up until recently. The main reason is that it clears up my skin. I still can not figure out what else will work but if anyone has suggestions that would be appreciated. It was about 40-60 a month and the lotion is also expensive.

I already have skin cancer (I was born with it. It's Basal Cell Nevus Syndrome) and it really saddens me when people tan. I just wish they'd know the pain they'll have to go through if they do get it, which they more than likely will. I mean I have a lesion right under my eye and I'll have to have needles stuck there and then either have it cut or burn off. And I don't even tan! But people are hardheaded, this we ALL know.

Eating a lot of fruit will clear up your skin, especially strawberries. And drink water. Also clinique toner on a q-tip is great for dabbing on little spots as a touch up.

Actually getting sun for 30-60minutes a day is important for getting vitamin D from the sun. Now I'm not saying that you should be getting under a tanning bed every week for an hour, but you SHOULD be getting some sun. The experts say that this generation is so Vitamin D deficient because we've become "afraid" of the sun.

Ok, this is a very controversial subject, so I will tread lightly.

I "do" believe over-tanning and tanning beds can hurt your body.

But I do not believe the sun is bad for you. I have seen many people who avoid sun exposure and always slap on that sunscreen get skin cancer.

Cancer happens when cell mutate. The reason the sun is linked to the cause of skin cancer is because when you get a burn your skin must create new cells, and if you are unhealthy and do not eat right your cells have a chance to mutate when created.

Also without sun you have a higher chance of bone problems. The sun gives you Vitamin D and Vitamin D allows your body to absorb calcium. Without calcium our bones turn to dust.

ok you are supposed to get some sun during the week without sunscreen on, but it's only about 10-15 minutes if you are fair skinned or up to 30 minutes if you have darker skin. And that's a WEEK. Not every day. That way you get your Vitamin D from the sun for the week, but make sure you wear sunscreen for the rest of the time. You don't need anymore direct sun exposure without sunscreen other than those 30 minutes max.
