The Photo That Inspired Me to Get Over It and Get Into a Swimsuit. Finally.

Do you remember how terrified I was of wearing a bathing suit a few months ago? It had been three years since I last ventured to the beach because of my body insecurities. But this past weekend, when my family invited me to the Jersey Shore, I surprised myself (and everyone else) by accepting the invitation! I wasn't exactly thrilled by the idea of ME in a bathing suit, but I put on a little beach skirt and went anyway. Do you know what finally pushed me to go? It was this old photo my darling cousin Stephanie came across recently. She snapped a photo with her phone and sent it to me:

Not exactly the greatest photo. That was me, about four years ago, in a bathing suit. Long before I cared about what I was feeding my body, and before Body by Glamour. I feel like a completely different person now. Normally photos like that make me cringe, but it was such a great reminder of how far I’ve come. And it inspired me to put aside my issues with my body long enough to enjoy a day at the beach. If there’s one thing I’ve learned in the past few months, it’s that I shouldn’t let my imperfections--big or small--stop me from enjoying life. I’ve done that for WAY too long.

See our tips: 13 Easy Ways to Save 200 Calories a Day

Here are a couple of photos from Saturday (The bathing suit is from the brilliant folks at Shape FX, by the way.):

Going to the beach also made me realize that I view other people’s bodies differently now as well. I think it has to do with the gradual change in mindset about my own body. There were plenty of beer bellies and dimpled thighs among the six packs, and super-toned arms on the boardwalk. But so what? I added my not-so-toned tummy and jiggly inner thighs (among other things) to the mix. People are imperfect, and that’s OK. I found it empowering and refreshing!

Do you cringe when you see old photos of yourself, or does it inspire you? And what do you think of the fact I wore a cover up--was it a cop out? And have you ever NOT experienced something wonderful because you were too self-conscious? I don’t want to live with those kinds of regrets anymore. You? I hope not! Please share!

You look lovely! Kudos to you. Just this week I read Cindy Crawford's comments about her own cellulite. Her healthy attitude about body acceptance and confidence is echoed by your article. Great job!

I have to say for a long time I to was scared to put ona bathing suit and go to a beach or pool. Everyone was out in their little bikinis (some thongs) and I realized I looked really good. Now I will never have the confidence to wear a thong on a beach no matter what I look like, but I have been able to put aside my insecurities thanks to those women in their 50's wearing thongs.

You look fabulous! Keep your confidence up and you will continue with your success. I know from personal experience how hard it is to change the way we perceive our bodies and I also know that it is a life-long battle. You were gorgeous in the first picture and are gorgeous in the last photo!

That bathing suit is really pretty! And cover-ups are great. Better to wear a cover-up and go out and have a good time than feel self-conscious and uncomfortable. I vacation a lot in Las Vegas, and nothing is more encouraging than hanging out poolside with the variety of folks just having fun in the sun and in the water.

Hi Karina, you have a huge beautiful smile on your face and you are still grinning in the 2nd pic...I like the idea of a cover-up....it's (just) enough to secure any doubts one may have about any area of concern (whether you have an area of concern or not.) It is completely appropriate in any event. One doesn't have to be self-conscious to don one....Besides, cover-ups are always in fashion. By the way, you appear really firm.....

Now that you look and feel great...Way to go! Just your attitude change alone, has raised the bar for you, so good luck on your continued journey....Janet

Oh, this is in response to Suzy's MEAN comment...

Of course there are people of different sizes who wear bathing suits...Karina in my opinion is very courageous in her willingness to show others that it's ok to feel confident...in however one may choose to dress...

    CONSIDERATION for others is foremost...

On this site. we try to leave uplifting and positive responses....You might try doing the same for others sometime and just maybe you'll experience something wonderful....

You look just fine. The color of the suit brings out your skin tones, and you look happy. Now that you know you can hit the beach, you'll probably accept those invitations more often.
