The Power of a Good Scent: 5 Aromatherapy Remedies for 5 Different Moods

Having just sprayed my room with Lavender Floral Water, I can attest to the healing powers of aromatherapy.  I am calm, relaxed and ready to happily float through the second half of my day.  And a bonus: Aromatherapy can help melt the pounds away.

Breathe Deep, Calm Down, Lighten Up
Aromatherapy may not miraculously melt away the pounds, but there are heaps of evidence that aroma effects mood. And we all know how mood effects our eating!

What is aromatherapy?
Aromatherapy means "treatment through senses." It is based on the ancient ritual of using essential oils to heal by "therapeutically" stimulating the nasal/olfactory senses through fragrance.

Aromatherapy can fight stress, soothe the mind and lighten your mood. The association between smell and emotion are closely linked, and breathing in pleasurable scents can elicit positive responses in the brain, resulting in a sense of well-being.

Aromatherapy can also lessen our food cravings! A recent study at the St. George's Hospital in London showed that vanilla might aid in weight loss. Overweight people who wore vanilla-scented skin patches reported that they ingested smaller amounts of sweets. Catherine Collins, a state registered dietician, concluded (although not proven in a clinical setting) that strongly scented sweet vanilla candles or essence may have a similar effect. (My home smells like a Vanilla Factory!)

And - by massaging the appropriate essential oils into the skin - physically, aromatherapy can ease aches and pains, heal burns and even - some say - diminish cellulite! (What?? Did you say diminish cellulite?)

Here are a few aromatherapy suggestions from OLofWL that you can either add to your bath, massage into your skin, inhale directly (put a few drops on a handerchief) or diffuse the scent into an entire room. Ahhhh...

1. To combat Sweet Cravings, try vanilla.

2. Good Stress Beaters are jasmine, ylang ylang, grapefruit, lavendar, rose and mandarin.

3. Need a Spirit Kick? Breathe in jasmine.

4.Lift Depression with lemon, grapefruit, jasmine, ylang-ylang, orange, helichrysum.

5. For greater Self-Acceptance, try jasmine, vetiver, frankincense, sandalwood, bergamot.

Can anyone tell me if aromatherapy works if you cannot smell? Exactly what is it in any fragrance the is having the effect it seems to have? I cannot smell due to sinus surgery and always wonder if aromatherapy would still have an effect for me?

    Linda,

Aromatheraphy is exactly as it sounds; therapy through smells.

So, yes, if your senses of smell are disqualified; it is unlikely that aromatherapy will work on you.

These smells themselves don't necessarily have to contain anything, no gaseous form of chemical or anything like that. In fact, I'd say that is probably less healthy and you might end up being addicted.

Which simply means that aromatherapy is the science of fooling the brain. Where does all your emotional imbalance start? The brain. Where is your pride and self-esteem? The brain.

Smelling certain smells will fool the brain into, say, secreting more or less adrenaline, causing you to get all fired up or dialed down.

If your sinuses aren't capable of picking up smells properly, your brain won't read them.

Shura, it's the smells. Not anything in them. Mint gets you awake, not addicted. Lavender relaxes you, not makes you stay awake to smell more of it to get you high. Smells are pure and natural, unless it's something very unsavory.

And iin no way does your brain be fooled by jasmine or vanilla. You know how smell is a major part of taste? That's how vanilla 'feeds' you. So inn that sense, yes, you are fooled. But not your brain.

But, you are right. It's the smells that either relax you or energize you. If the smells would affect you if you cannot smell, then it's something in the smell, not the smell itself.

I have always found that peppermint is very invigorating and helps to get me going. I am also a huge fan of a lot of the earthy scents, dragons blood (which is hard to find), nag champa ... I find these to be very relaxing.

Each to her or his own when it comes to scents.

Some say you need the oil if you like the smell.

Others say you need that specific essential oil

to use as a remedy if you do not like the smell.

The brain and the body can pick and chose the phytomolecules from the oils whether you like the way the oils smells or not.

I use GingerMD in the operating to prevent nausea after surgery.
