Many of you are
psyched you don't have to deal with snow or bitter weather now
that Summer is here, but now you have to deal with humidity and
high temps. Here are some tips for exercising in the heat.
Just because it's Summer, that doesn't mean you have to
exercise outside. If it's too hot and humid, exercise indoors
at a gym or in your home. Not only will it keep you cool, but
it's also helpful if you suffer from
seasonal allergies
- Exercise Early in the Morning or Late at
Night
Temps can be 20 degrees cooler in the early morning or late
evening, so reschedule your workouts during those times. If
it's darker outside, exercise with a buddy.
Exercising in direct sunlight can make you overheat, so if you love
getting your heart rate up outdoors, look for a place that's
shady such as the woods or a neighborhood with lots of
trees.
If you can't exercise in a cool, shady place, then wear a
hat
($22.50) or
visor ($16.50) to shield
your face from the sun. It'll also absorb sweat so it
doesn't drip in your eyes.
Dehydration is a big risk when exercising in the heat, since you
tend to sweat a lot more. Be sure to pack some water with you.
I'm a fan of
Camelbak back and
waist packs ($45). If you plan on exercising in the heat longer
than 30 minutes, drink
electrolyte-infused
water.
Stand over the sink and drench your hair with water. When it's
completely soaked, wrap it in a bun. As you run or bike ride, the
breeze on your
wet head will keep you
cool.
Work Out While
Wet
Take advantage of the water and
burn calories by swimming,
kayaking, water skiing, snorkeling, or surfing. The water will keep
you cool, but it can also add resistance to make your workouts even
more effective.
