Top 8 signs of lasting weight loss

Other than staring at the bathroom scale, what are the most common signals people use to know they are at the right weight?  Here's what 322 people told us in a recent survey:

      * When my jeans feel comfortable again.

      * When I have to start wearing a belt.

      * I suck in my stomach, and I can see some definition, like a 4-pack.

      * When my belt notch moves back to where it used to be.

      * When I don't get tired walking up two flights of stairs to my office.

      * When I can see my cheekbones.

      * When I don't have to inhale to button my pants.

      * When friends or colleagues ask me if I've lost weight.

How many of these do you use?

I don't see what the big deal is about HOW SOMEONE LOOKS ON THE OUTSIDE. It's WHAT'S ON THE INSIDE that counts!

dmitch042 - I love your comment! I knew I had to lose a few pounds last year when I could feel my stomach jiggling when I went up and down stairs!

My best barometer is how my work pants fit. If I have to unbutton them on the ride home because they are squishing my belly, it's time to cut back on food a little and exercise more.

This post doesn't give any good information regarding how to tell when you are the right size. The thing is, if you are looking at yourself, you will never think you are the right size (especially if you feel you are overweight).

I know that I am the right size when I have the energy to play with my children, and to dance around the house while I clean. I am the right size when I am working out everyday, and enjoying it.

There is no "right size". I found when I worry least about my weight and more about my health (eating the right things, and keeping myself busy, so I don't want comfort foods), I lose weight without trying.

The key to losing weight is to put less healthy calories in your body than you burn. In another words get up and move. I lost ten pounds in two weeks. I didn't stop eating or do some strange diet, I was moving into a new house, and I lost the weight because I kept busy all day moving things. I didn't pick up any of the heavy items, as a matter of fact, I moved very few boxes. All I did was pack, unpack, and clean both houses. I ate every meal, but I ate something healthy and home cooked. I eat lots of veggies, and I rarely eat anything fried. The idea is that you bring up your level of activity. You can't just walk to the fridge and back a couple extra times, you have to actually get up and do something more than usual, for at least 20 minutes. If 20 is too much, start with 10 and then gradually move up. The other thing is to make sure you don't get bored with your activities. Mix things up. Pull out the music you love the best and dance around like a fool. Who cares?

Am I my perfect size. Nope. But I'm okay with what I am, and if I lose, great, if I don't, well as long as I can play with my kids and I don't find myself dreading to do something because of my weight, or lack of ability to do something due to my wieght, then I'm happy. If I do find myself with that problem. I just get busy!

The title was a bit misleading. We need to have suggestions on how to not backslide.

I'm surprised by these comments, as it seems many of them can be flawed at times. Perhaps feeling bloated, a little extra water weight, or a large meal can cause anyone's jeans to feel tight and may cause that belt to come undone! These may be great ways to "feel" thinner, but your weight loss should be measured by your body fat. For some great tips on how to change up your routine and work all parts of your body, check out the prevention link below. You'll be sure to lose some real weight and keep your whole body toned!

I am 37, I have had four children, I have high Blood Pressure, High Cholestrol and weigh 120kgs, I smoke but do not touch any type of alcohol. I do not eat alot, sometimes only one meal a day. My weight keeps on going up and up. I really need help because I am tired of being like this. Is there anyone out there with some good advise?

Actually I walk an hour in the morning...and sometimes about 30-40 minutes in the early evenings. I can start toneing and dropping some pounds without a strict diet, but with more fresh fruit, yougurt, and low carb snacks I find things start fitting much better not to mention feeling better and more energy! I'm 5'9" and a month ago I was 220#s. I have to say that putting my music on that I love just makes me want to walk even further. It's great and even better when your done.
