User Post: Keeping a Food Diary will help me lose weight HOW????

This is a topic that NO ONE likes to talk about. It’s a pain to do, and who really wants to keep a nit-picky little record of every little thing they eat?

I know all the excuses why NOT to keep a food diary; I’ve used them a million times myself! At the bottom of it, though, is the fact that we just DO NOT WANT to be held accountable for all the foods that we are eating!

Before I started on my weight loss journey (http://www.thinlandia.com/) several months ago, I had not really successfully kept a food journal for any length of time. How do you mark down how many calories are in the handful of crackers you eat out of the box? The cereal that you just mound into your biggest bowl? The mountain of pasta with a river of olive oil on it? And when you are preparing a food, how much of a hassle is it to actually MEASURE everything as you are cooking, and when you are finished, count up all the calories, measure the outcome, and figure out what kind of calories are in a serving? I mean, SERIOUSLY, who has time for THAT?????

Like I said, I understand completely your reluctance to keep a food diary! But I will tell you this - it Really Does Work! By committing to this process, you are making a commitment to yourself that you are ONLY going to eat a certain amount of food every day. By sticking to this amount, you can be assured that you WILL lose weight. It is a matter of certainty - if you are taking in less calories than you are using, you will lose.

I have chosen to use Excel to keep my food journal. It's convenient because I am always at my computer, and I can keep my weight loss progress chart on the same document. Using this method, I can cut and paste the foods and meals I have used before, and it cuts down tremendously on time. If you would prefer an online resource, you can go to www.calorie.count.about.com, or www.fitday.com, which both have online food journal options.

Seriously, Do It! What are you waiting for?

I have been keeping a food journal for the past month (started May 1st). This is not the first time either. Every time I do it I stay on track towards getting in shape. I personally have to be accountable for everything that goes into my body or else I completely lose control. Since keeping track and trying to jog a few mornings a weeek I can feel a difference. The sleeping better at night and the not groggy feeling from eating a bunch of crap during the day has been my biggest payoff. Can't wait to see the difference when wearing a bikini the next time. Haha

(sighs) I start one, then I stop doing it. Then I restart it, then I stop doing it. I guess I'm just not committed enough to get these 15 pounds off for good. :(

I belonged to Weight Watchers and was counting points. That worked great. But i was paying $16/month. So i decided to start counting calories instead. It works just as well and even better. You know exactly what you are eating. You can keep track online at Calorie Count. Great website. It is kind of a pain to keep track of everything you put in your mouth. But it is worth it when you start seeing a pound drop every week from the scale. The longer you do it the easier it gets because you know how many calories are in the food you eat on a regular basis.

My nutritionist highly recommends keeping a food journal. I can honestly say that I have more success when I keep track of everything I eat! I think journaling heightens one's awareness and increases accountability. It's important for us to realize how many calories are in our favorite foods so that we can make better choices. It's not always easy or convenient, but it is definitely necessary for me!

Go Donna! You make me laugh because it's so true, food journals are a pain in the butt! BUT, they keep us healthy and, like you said, accountable.

I've been using them for years and they've changed the way I eat, for the better. If it's too complicated to put in my food journal (like eggplant parm, say) I'll save that for a 'day off'. I take a day off, maybe two or three a month, from keeping track; kind of like a break from the gym. And I use FitDay.com, it's a free was to enter your food in an online, private journal. It tracks your fat, calories, carbs, nutrients and minerals for you, even sodium and cholesterol! You can create custom foods that you use over and over again, or choose foods form their HUGE database, everything from sugar to chicken wings. You can also track your weight loss, measurements over time, moods, and the calories you're burning each day, so you know when to stop eating.

A personal trainer showed it to me and I've been hooked ever since. And it's FREE.

Either way, stay strong! High five! :)

I agree... Food Journals are a pain in the butt.... I hate doing it because the data base never seems big enough so I always have to enter in food or I just plain forget... but perhaps I will try the one that you and Lizbeth suggests.. I also think I will get a better food scale.. thanks for reminding me to try and start one up again.

I use livestrong.com also - it is a GREAT site and it's free too, unless you want to upgrade, which you don't really need to do. I try not to track constantly as it then becomes to much of an obsession so I'll track for a week or two, take a week or two off then track again.
