User Post: Lovely Lady Lumps? Or Breast Concern? Dr. Kate Answers

Dr. Kate,

I had a baseline mammogram, and two lumps were found in my left breast, so I was sent to get an ultrasound. The doctor did not really say too much. She asked me if I had an infection in my breast, I said no and that was that. She said that she really couldn't tell anything else because this was my baseline and that I needed to come back in 6 months to see if the lumps have grown. Is this a normal answer? Do I wait 6 months to see if it is cancer? I had one lump removed from my right breast in 1993 which was not cancer but is that what you do? Should I go see another doctor?

Leery About Lumps

Dear Leery,

Breast lumps can be tricky to manage. There are several features of a lump that doctors consider in trying to figure out if a lump is benign (not cancerous) or not:
  • Smooth or rough? A lump that's smooth like a marble is more likely to be benign thank one that is bumpy around the edges.
  • Mobile or fixed? A lump that you can squish around between your fingers is more likely to be benign than one that feels cemented in place.
  • Fluid-filled or solid? A cyst filled with fluid is 99% of the time benign.
Additionally, your medical history can provide clues. If you're a breast-feeding mom, a lump is more likely to be a blocked milk duct. Similarly, if you've got fibrocystic breast disease, a lump may be cyclical thickening of normal tissue. The radiologist, too, looks for features of the lump on the scan to give their best estimate of what the lump is.

But in the end, the only way to know that a lump is not cancer is to sample it--using a needle (with or without ultrasound or CT scan) to extract cells, then examine them under a microscope. No doctor can tell you with certainty that a lump is benign until you've had it biopsied. But if your doctor or the radiologist has a low suspicion that the lumps are cancer, waiting 3-6 months for another exam and mammo/ultrasound is reasonable.

Bottom line? Ask your doctor why she thinks it's okay to wait 6 months for another check. And if you're not reassured, seek a second opinion. It's your body, and you need to feel good about what's happening with it.

Have you ever had a breast lump? Did you have a biopsy, or did your doctor say it was okay to wait?

You will feel relieved if you get a second opinion. Otherwise the uncertainty will linger for the next 6 months. What do you have to lose?

I just had a breast lump removed last week. I would get a second opinion if I were you. I found the lump and had the mommo and ultrasound with no conclusive results. I then went to a surgeon who ordered a needle biopsy which came back negative, but I opted to have it removed just for safety and my piece of mind. I feel much more comfortable not having it in there.

Actually, Anja, you have a lot to lose. As one who has had "lumpy boobs," my whole life I've been poked and proded, jabbed and stabbed and drained of all my bodily fluids since I was 35. There is no family history of breast cancer on either side of my family yet, my doctors seem to be on a holy quest to continue to have unnecessary biopsies, and unnecessary follow ups because of botched biopsies. My life has been completely ruined. In January 2009, I was a healthy 42 year old woman. After an unnecessary and botched biopsy was performed in February 2009, which got infected, I am still under a surgeons care, am in constant pain and have a reactive lymph node as well as a traveling metal marker, which they insert in your breast after a biopsy so they know what tissue they've removed. I wince every time I'm in the shower, every time I put on a jacket or shirt or every time my boyfriend touches me or tries to hug me. My surgeon says the pain will likely never go away, or even subside, but he smiles and says, "but your biopsy was benign, so be thankful," as if that is enough to justify the monthly visits to his office, the constant pain, my daily antibiotics and pain killers. And he had the nerve to suggest I go back for another mammogram because he wanted to make sure they got the right lump! HA!!! No way will I ever get another mammogram, sonogram or mammogram. The medical community just wants to run tests for the sake of running tests--especially if you have insurance. My life is ruined and the doctors who have treated me have taken a healthy, happy 42 year old and turned her into a sickly, miserable 42 year old woman in constant pain.

I am not in direct patient care but have worked in healthcare for about 10 years now. Working closely with Physicians and Radiologists I have heard a similar message inrespect to getting a biopsy when it itsn't medically necessary or suspect.

In the even that a lump is suspect the directionis often to biopsy and then immediatly remove. However when something is not suspect... sticking with a needle can cause negative responses or in a very early stage cancer a spreading of the cancer cells to other areas of the body.

A second openion is suggested if you are worried - getting a potentially unnecessary procedure could be risky

I am an Ultrasound Technician, and working with doctors in a breast care center I see this all the time. If you had a mammo and ultrasound and the doctor tells you to come back in six months it's a pretty good chance you have nothing to worry about. If the doctor looked at it in front of you and did see something of concern they would have wanted to give you the option of biopsy. Well at least that's how things work at my office. Hope that helps out some.

Thandy, there are some changes you can make in your diet to help alleviate some of the lumps.

If you were not comfortable with the doctor's report, you still have the chance of visiting another doctor so as to be sure and avert future problems ."A stitch in time saves nine"

I have a lump on my right breast and my oncologist and surgeon advised me to have it removed. At first, i wanted to have it removed but i will be asking for a second opinion and I am trying alternative medicines that a herbal doctor advised me to do so. Frankly, I am so afraid having this, but i dont lose hope, i always pray to God for a miracle that soon i wake up one morning this is gone.
