User Post: Portion explosion!
user
You’ve probably heard that portions have gotten bigger over the
years, but do you know how much bigger? Check out some of these
popular foods and see how different things were 20 years ago than
they are now.
20 years ago: a bagel was three inches in diameter and had
140 calories.
Today’s portion: six inches and 350 calories.
Still a much better breakfast option than this 920 calorie
breakfast burrito!
20 years ago: a
cheeseburger had 333 calories.
Today’s portion: 590 calories.
And have you
seen the new 4,800 calorie burger???!
20 years ago: a portion
of spaghetti and meatballs used to have 500 calories.
Today’s portion: 1,025 calories. This includes two
cups of pasta with sauce and three large meatballs.
20 years ago: French fries were 2.4 ounces and 210
calories.
Today’s portion: 6.9-ounces with 610 calories.
These
Oven French Fries have 238 calories per serving and satisfy your
craving for the real deal!
20 years ago: a turkey
sandwich had 320 calories.
Today’s portion: a 10-inch turkey sandwich has 820
calories.
Even though I know portions are bigger, actually seeing these
examples - which by the way, are from the National Institutes of
Health - really brings it home. No wonder
obesity
rates are so out of control in this country.
Did any of these portions surprise you?

Wow that's crazy. No wonder there is such a problem with obesity in this country. I must say I would never eat a sandwich that large. My sandwiches are the typical homemade sandwich size with regular, sliced bread like the 20-year-ago photo.

i'm not surprised at all. i remember when the current small drink was a medium, the current medium a large and the current large didn't exist at mcdonald's.

Yes I agree with the change, especially as said above with the drink sizes. Once I was especially thirsty and ordered a medium. The thing was the size of a liter of soda! Small works just fine for me, and to be honest even that is too big sometimes.

I dare you to find a 'small' drink any more. You say small and they give you a medium, a small is not even on the menu. Lots of places you have to say 'child size'.

A store by us recently started selling "mini" bagels, and I swear they are the size that bagels were when I was a kid. It's all I buy now. The "regular" size bagels are too bready and we usually pulled the centers out, but the new "minis" are just right.
I also have a hard time getting a sandwich these days because they're just too damn big. I'm always asking if I can get just a half (and the answer is usually no). The only time I order a sandwich these days is if I'm with someone who'll split it.

I love bagels, but I stay away from them becasue they've gotten so big. Those 'Baglefuls' things aren't too bad though. 200 calories and it satisfies my cravings for a begel and cream cheese.
Just a suggestion!! :^)

Personally, I remember bagels being the same size (maybe even bigger) at the little family-run bagel shops in New Jersey, and that *was* 20 years ago.
You can still buy little cheeseburgers at McDonald's and places like that, and a lot of places have sliders now, which are nice and small.
I certainly won't argue with the larger point though -- most of the time, portions now are much larger than they used to be.

I agree that portion sizes are too big, but I wonder if these results are exaggerated? I looked at the national instutite of health website and found an article (http://jama.ama-assn.org/cgi/content/full/289/4/450), and their results weren't as dramatic. Perhaps you were looking at a different study?

I believe it! I ordered a pasta dish last night and I swear there was enough there to feed 4 people! Needless to say I had to bring some home. Also there was a huge garden salad for the starter. Some people will eat untill all the food is gone. I try to maintain control.
