User Post: What are some good ways to relieve stress?

I'm in desperate need of a stress killer. School has got me pulling my hair out!

All suggestions are welcome, please.

    Punching Bag or workout to some of your favorite music.

    Allison,

    I remember how much stress school can carry and how it can seem like there is very little time to take care of yourself. I imagine that even a walk in between classes or during your lunch break would help you feel better. Taking a couple of laps around a building or the block for ten minutes might do wonders for you.

    If you are up for something more, working out in a class or doing some strength training would be a great stress relief and help you focus on strengthening your body (and maybe give that brain a break). Does your school have a fitness center or gym? Is there a way you can sign up for some free time there?

    Ok if you don't want to work out...Try a hot bubble bath to relax your body and listen to some music to calm you. Don't stress over school it will be over before you know it/

    Besides taking a long run listening to calming music, I write in a journal. I get all the crazy thoughts out of my head onto paper. The writings don't have to be proper grammar nor do they have to make sense to anyone other than you. But reading it after a week or so will really help you understand how to fix those stress enablers.

    I am going to keep an eye on this thread and put in my own ideas. I'm currently a student and the past couple of weeks have put me on stress overload. Some of the ways I chill? I cook. I live in a dorm, so I don't have a kitchen; but, I have friends in "high places" so I just borrow their kitchens.

    I'm a mentor with Big Brothers,Big Sisters. Why in the world would I want to add something stressful? Hanging out with an eight-year old once a week is soooo relaxing. This past week, I just built a tower with blocks...and forgot all about the paper that's due on Friday.

    And, I know this will sound impossible, but...I try to take some time away from the grind. Tonight, I'm going to see a play that my university's putting on...I'll get to kick back and stop thinking...gotta love shutting the brain off.

    Now, this last thing is a bit more...financially testy. Get an ice cream treat (or hot cocoa, or brownie, or whatever you like) and go to an automatic car wash. I did that about every other month during high school. And...it made my day when I did it. The soothing sounds of the washer and watching the streams of water...melted the stress away.

    1. Take a few minutes whenever you start to feel stressed at work and take deep breaths and try to allow yourself to relax as you release the breath.

    2. If you've never done yoga before, get into some comfortable clothes and do some light stretching on your floor for 20 min. You will be amazed at how relaxed you become. If you like to listen to soft music (preferably anything you can't sing along to) while you are doing this, even better.

    3. Take a walk by yourself because if you walk with others you might be tempted to talk about what's bugging you.

    4. Try to avoid eating any sweets or caffeine because while it may make you feel good at the moment, you will feel tired and sluggish which won't improve your stress in the long run.

    5. I agree with the post about a bubble bath or jacuzzi soak with candlelight and soft music. Always a nice way to unwind.

    6. Lastly, if you are the type who prefers to "get it out", working out is a great way to relieve it.

    Nothing will relieve your stress more than an hour of kickboxing in a kickboxing class. I know. I didn't even know the meaning of stress until after I became a nurse and I would leave after a 12 hour shift with a headache and so much tension in my shoulders. My boyfriend, who was very fit and at the time was a sales rep at a gym, recommended working out. It was the best thing that ever happened to me. I would literally have to have my boyfriend drive me home after a class because all that tension, now erased after an hour, would leave me limp and exhausted. Then, I would have a hot bubble bath and go to bed. Your sleep will be so deep and your head will clear. You will be able to think more clearly as working out will increase your focus. Try it. I never thought I would be into exercising, but now I can't stop.

    Learn to listen to soft music....You're a teenager and I know that you said you were in to Punk and Metallica, which is great, but NOT relaxing. I know, I know Metallica rocks, but, get a CD with calming sounds, a candle, lavender oil (real, not the fake kind). Run a hot bath, and add about 3-4 drops of lavender oil to your water. Turn on the soothing music, light your candle and lay back in your bath and relax.....I try to do this at least twice a week.

    Do something you like to do, but don't have time for often. That could be art, music, maybe hiking, or relaxing in a hot tub with esential oils.
