User Post: Would You Ban Plastic Bottled Water?
user
A small town in Australia is
doing just that. Residents of Bundanoon, Australia claim that it is
not good for the environment, along with other complaints.
How far would you go if you knew for a fact that tap water was no
less hazardous to drink than bottled water? Many experts claim that
tap water is just as safe as bottled water and that most bottled
water actually lack certain minerals that humans need to stay
healthy. There also have been recent scientific studies showing
that plastic bottles release a synthetic type of hormone that makes
it easier for women to get pregnant! Maybe Bundanoon, Australia is
on the right track...
We all know that food franchises such as McDonalds and others,
discontinued serving their drinks in plastic containers and are now
using paper cups. They were aware of the contaminants that leak out
of plastic containers when heated... Many people still drink
bottled water in their cars, after the container has been
previously heated by the sun.
Many federal organizations in the United States have discontinued
handing out bottled water in their meetings too. This is not
because it is unhealthy but because it also wastes a lot of federal
funds and taxpayers money, to make and transport bottled water. In
fact over 60 cities in the US do not have bottled water in their
city meetings and many cities in Canada are doing the same
thing.
I think that if we must buy bottled water, that we at least request
the bottlers to use glass instead of plastic containers. Same for
milk and other plastic contained food manufacturers. Besides, it
tastes BETTER!

Walnut Grove Spring Water is sold in glass bottles - specifically because it's safer and the water tastes better. It's more expensive, but it is actually piped from a rare natural spring of pure clean water very deep in the earth. Created by glaciers thousands of years ago or such. I've seen the spring (at the surface); seen the test results; and drank the water.
The company is only a few years old and is still not available everywhere. Check it out at: www.walnutgrovespring.com.

If the municipal water is safe it makes since. City dumps are getting filled up with an unnecessary amount of plastic bottles. Honestly, I do love the convenience of being able to buy a bottle of water while I am out and about, but I mostly do that because there is not access to water fountains were I can refill my water bottle.
What these cities need to do is make sure that there is a public source of water available, many parks no longer have water fountains. If the city would create an infastructure for people to get easy access to water away from home I see nothing wrong with banning plastic bottles.

Chowski that is probably because of the health risks that comes with public water fountains... I know even if our parks had them I wouldn't use them because you never know whose mouth has been on it. But I also use the reusable bottles such as Nalgene... especially with things like the swine flu hanging around...
However, I know in our city we advertise heavily that the tap water is better than the bottled water.. and it really is.

I live in Southern California where the tap water is almost undrinkable and unhealthily high in sodium. The Diet Police were after us for years about soda, so we switched to diet and the Chemical Police ragged about artificial sweeteners, so we finally start to drink lots of water like the Physiology Police have been telling us to and now the Green Police are on us about the bottles. MERCY ALREADY

YES! Not only is drinking out of plastic bottles dangerous (chemicals leach from the plastic), it is also environmentally irresponsible. I drink tap water all the time. The only thing is bottled water is handy in the event of a natural disaster or something where city water supplies become contaminated, and it is sometimes the only way to get water to hand out to people during a short time. But bottled water should not be used for regular everyday use.

NO! The reason I love bottled water is the convenience of it. Water is the only thing that quenches my thirst, so it is great that I can just pick up a bottle of water no matter where I am. I used to have to search for filthy water fountains with warm water.

I too love drinking bottled water for many reasons such as the convenience and the fact that tap water is pretty bad where I live.
However, there are lots of places that you can drop off your plastic bottles for recycling here. Even my gym has a recycling drop off for your plastic bottles and many of the bottle water companies have cut back on their plastic by 50% so that helps a little.
At work, we have bottled water but we also have a water dispenser so after we finish a bottle of water, we just refill it through out the day.
