What Do You Think of This Controversial Fitness Statement From Gwyneth Paltrow?

http://celebhairstyle.files.wordpress.com/2008/08/gwyneth-paltrow-hairstyle-bob.jpg
Margarita talked about some wacky health advice she heard recently, and when I read that post, my response, in a phrase, was: "amen, sister." I have a gripe of my own to add to her list: As much as I love our pal Gwyneth Paltrow (hugs to Apple and Moses!), I'm a little miffed about something she said recently....

Apparently Gwyneth's trainer, Tracy Anderson, is in hot water for allegedly making false claims about her past (at issue: whether she was ever sponsored by Carnation Instant Breakfast, among other things--I say who cares!). But, in all this controversy, I caught a video on YouTube where Gwyneth and Tracy are working out together, and Gwyneth turns to the camera and says this sort of shocking thing:

"When you're 35, you either starve yourself, or you do serious cardio."

Agreed, very few people get a free ride when it comes to staying fit/at a healthy weight. But, but, BUT--starve yourself? Here's why I take issue with this:

*This is such a Hollywood-centric statement. Maybe it's the norm for women in Hollywood to throw around the word starve, but this is not my norm--and I hope it's not your norm either.

*She's outlining an either-or-scenario that just plain, well, sucks: You either starve yourself or you workout like a madwoman, 6 days a week. Um, I'll pass on both, thankyouverymuch.

What do you think?

we must remember she's not your neighbor or the lady down the street. she is a hollywood actress. the rules are different. her career is dependent on her body and looks.

as for me, i'm not 35 yet but i'll never starve myself or work out 6 days a week unless it's a brisk walk or short jog.

I'll pass on both too. :) I admit I do need some self-control when it comes to sweets, and I definitely need to work out more often, but I'm not going to go nuts over it. I just don't have the time or the interest. Thirty minutes a day is fine (would be IDEAL even), and if you can't look the way you want by eating right and working out sensibly, then maybe the way you want yourself to look is unrealistic.

I think it is soooo true!! At 35 I had my 4th child & could not take off the baby weight as easily as I had before. Even with drastically cutting my calorie intake I could not lose weight. It wasn't until I added a structured exercise regime could I lost any weight. When I was younger I could lose weight by only changing eating patterns. Now it requires an intense effort both with diet & exercise. btw...I'm not trying to fit into size 0 clothes. I prefer size 8.

"Serious cardio"? Sounds like she's hitting the ganja as well. After all, it's natural!

    Why is this controversial??

Her point was that doing serious cardio was the healthy thing to do, as opposed to starving yourself. And serious cardio is subjective, depending upon your routine. She wasn't suggesting that you starve yourself. She was suggesting that when you get older and your metabolism slows, you have to kick it up if you want to stay looking good. And you aren't doing any cardio if you don't eat well, you won't have muscles if you don't eat well, and you won't be healthy if you don't eat well. It's not controversial, it's good sense.

I took it the same way as sun2go: Either you starve, or you seriously work out, FOR HER!!! I can admit to the same idea. Maybe she should have said "tweak your diet," or something gentler. If I work out, I can have a burger, but if I don't, I need the salad. I don't think she meant binge and purge and exercise yourself rail thin. And seeing that she was working out in the video, then I'm sure we can go with the idea that she eats, therefore she exercises.

    Who... cares???

    She was obviously joking.

You (the author) need to find something more news worthy to write about... pathetic people left and right!

Might be over-exaggerating a bit, but I think she's right! If you want to look good in your 30's, you either get off your @ss and exercise, or you watch what you eat! The only other alternative is to do nothing and let a slowing metabolism and gravity take it's toll on your body!

Oh, don't worry! 80% of this country would NEVER be accused of "starving" themselves!

I don't know about you . . but I don't plan on being fat when I'm 35. I'm 20 rite now and already watch my calories and exercise. The reason people have a problem with her statement because they are lazy and the idea that it's possible to look that good, even if it means working out like crazy - whick they won't do!
