Who gets a bigger buzz from coffee: men or women?

Pop quiz: who gets a bigger mental boost from caffeine?

A. Men
B. Women
C. Neither

The answer? Drum roll, please…

A. Men. According to new research from the University of Barcelona, men feel more alert—more quickly—than women do after drinking a caffeinated beverage. In the study, participants sipped a caffeinated espresso (do you know the best coffees to drink?), then rated how alert they felt 10, 20 and 30 minutes later. Men reported feeling less drowsy after only 10 minutes and sustained the mental boost for the entire half hour. Women got a "kick" from the espresso, too, but rated it weaker than the men did. (Don’t drink coffee? Find out how your “energy” drink stacks up against coffee.)

Rest assured, ladies: I too was annoyed that men get the better end of the deal. But don’t forget that coffee does offer some health perks—it contains soluble fiber and antioxidants and may lower your risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Iced coffee anyone?

And here’s where we reap the benefits: as it turns out, just anticipating the stimulating effects of caffeine may be enough—particularly for women—to feel them. Using the same methods, researchers also looked at the mental effects of decaffeinated coffee. Ten minutes after drinking a cup of decaf, women reported feeling significantly more alert. The men reported only a slight mental boost. "Women may be more likely than men to experience a placebo response [to caffeine]," says Ana Adan, Ph.D., lead author and research head of the Psychopharmacology and Drug Dependence Group at the University of Barcelona.

Get a big dose of energy from these 4 surprising items you have in your kitchen right now.

I don’t plan to trade in my morning caffeinated cup of joe for decaf, but I will remember that a decaffeinated iced coffee after lunch might give me enough of a boost to get through an afternoon meeting—and not keep me up when it’s time to go to bed.

    Huh. Didn't know that.

However, I worked at a coffee shop and do know that flavored caffeinated coffee has the most caffeine of any of the options you will find at a coffee shop (except maybe a whole cup of espresso shots, but I'm talking normal drinks here.) People think dark roast has more caffeine because it's dark and it's bitter, but that's not true. Dark roast has less caffeine than light roast and flavors because it's roasted longer and the roasting process burns off some caffeine. The longer it's roasted, the less caffeine it will have. Espresso, conversely, does not have as much caffeine as drip coffee because it takes only 18-22 seconds to pull a perfect shot of espresso, and in that short amount of time you don't get as much caffeine as you'll get from a cup of drip coffee which takes about 2 minutes or so to brew. Flavors are (generally) added to light roasts like Colombian because the flavor won't show up as well in a dark roast. I'm not exactly sure why flavors have more caffeine than light roasts, though, if they're made from light roast. That's just what the owner of the store told me.

So, ladies, to up your chances of being caffeinated, opt for light roast coffee.

Just some trivia for you there.

Wow. I'm pretty sensitive to caffeine so this is good to know. Thanks for sharing, Jett! Now I have some cool coffee trivia to tell my hubby the next time we're trying to decide which roast to get! :)

Also coffee's a great way for people who are irregular to go on a "regular" basis. Especially if you add soy milk. I was one of those ppl who went only every 7-10 days but i started drinking coffee with soy milk and i go every day now. After seeing doctor after doctor, thats all it took. Who knew?

Oh, my gosh, Besito! I'm glad to hear that coffee with soy milk helped you become regular, but seriously, if you were THAT constipated without drinking coffee, I think you might need to make some changes to your diet. Just a thought, but try adding in more veggies or at least some Fiber One products. You should be going every day.
