Your Mother-in-Law Really Is Bad For Your Health

Posted by Jeanne Sager

If you're one of those people who read that headline and shook your head in denial, good for you. But let me tell you - you just aren't normal.

Lucky, yes. Normal. . . well, let scientists in Japan be the judge. Because a study by Harvard Medical School researchers showed Japanese women who live with their mothers-in-law are three times more likely to have a heart attack.

Making this study even more significant? Japanese women are traditionally at a much lower risk of cardiac disease than those of us living in the states.

The study followed ninety-one thousand men and women ages forty to sixty-nine over a ten-year period, determining men had little affect on their health when Mom came to live with them while their wives saw a decrease in cardiac health. The women were less likely to drink and smoke (maybe because they had someone breathing down their neck, clucking every time they picked up a wineglass?), but despite not having had any cardiac issues before the study began, six hundred seventy-one participants had been diagnosed with coronary artery disease by the study's end and three hundred thirty-nine had died of heart disease. I love my mother-in-law, she can come live with us any time, my mother on the other hand...I love her, but there would be problems!

    Hmmm. Very interesting.

Notice that the study was only of the mothers of the HUSBANDS.

Is that because that's believed to be the worse mother-in-law? Nobody's

    good enough for her son?

Japanese society is mucho different from American society, however.

Women are much less emancipated then here. More research needed.

I am very lucky. I just love my MIL to pieces. We get along great and have so many things in common. I love going to visit her and my FIL, and we spend about 90% of the time in the kitchen cooking together.

I suggest you ask mothers of married sons and daughters how they feel about this issue.

As a soon to be mother-in-law who had an amazing relationship with her in-laws (mother included), it disturbs me to see my future personna painted in such a negative way. If there is one thing I learned from my mother-in-law, it was how to be a good mother-in-law. Don't forget this relationship is a two way street.

I can not stand the thought of my in laws. They are horrible horrible people. They tried to stop our marriage. They tried to stop my husbands sisters marriage from taking place. They talk about their son in law to me in a terrible way. I can only imagine what they say about me. She's a wicked witch who hasn't worked in 5 years because she's "disabled". You know...one of those people who are disabled that still vacations on the beach with a pretty little drink in hand. She can shop all day with her husbands credit card and drive there and back with no problem. She can plant a flower garden with ease. She's getting free money each month while I have to bust my butt at work to make less than her I'm sure.

    Great in laws huh?

I almost have a heart attack just thinking of them.
