Clutter control video: because some of us are visual learners

Sometimes, even the professionals need professional help. Such was the case with Domino contributing editor Stephen Treffinger, who called in Matt Baier of Matt Baier Organizing to help him tame his nightmare of a home office. (I was shocked to see at the end of the video that this "home office" is actually his dining room table—you would never guess that in the beginning.) Baier offers a few useful tips for sorting and organizing, as well as the great mantra, "Clutter is postponed decisions," which you can repeat to yourself every time you are tempted to add another thing to the I'll-deal-with-that-later pile. And if you take nothing else away from the video, at the very least you'll probably feel a little better about your own messy desk by the end of it.

What a great video. I work at my dining room table when my office gets a little too cluttered. Which reminds me that I need to clean it now. I feel inspired.

I firmly believe in the symbolic power of making room for the new in your life by making room in your apartment, office, car, etc. I once came home from a long and grueling hike to Machu Picchu and all I thought when I stepped into my room was, "WHEN did I accumulate so much stuff??" So I put the recycling bin in the center of my room and went after it before I even started unpacking. It was so therapeutic to give myself permission to throw away all those little odd bits of paper and underwear that I had had since college (those didn't go in the recycling bin).

No, I'm not turning into a Buddhist monk, giving away everything except the shirt on mine and my kids' backs. I've just come to my senses. If I own a lot less, life will become simpler. -Blond & Blithe
