[Ed. note: User Une Femme found a great way to satisfy her stainless-steel designer table jones—with a freestanding Ikea kitchen counter unit that costs less than a tenth what the designer version does. Another great source for sturdy stainless work tables is a restaurant-supply outlet, which you can probably find in your city's Yellow Pages. Thanks, Une Femme!]A couple of years ago I needed a work desk that could take a beating. I looked around at thrift stores and other furniture retailers but nothing really caught my eye. Until I opened up my Design Within Reach catalogue to see a beautiful stainless steel work table with a not so beautiful price tag. I began to search around for something similar until I walked into Ikea and came across the Udden free-standing kitchen countertop. Yes, it was built for the kitchen but that is the kind of durability I wanted and needed. Say hello to the best $119 I've ever spent!
When I put it together I left off the back splash so I could work around all four sides. It has survived two moves and is very easy to clean.

The original that took my breath away and a piece I still hope to one day own.

If you go to a site called Ikea Hacker you will get all sorts of useful tips about using Ikea furniture in lots of different ways other than the purpose it was sold for. I've got some Billy Bookshelves which have got a bit shabby and are a bit too big. I suddenly had the brainwave of turning them into built in book-shelves and putting them in a wide alcove: adding decorative surrounds (strips can be bought from DIY stores) and painting the lot white. Searching on Ikea Hacker I them discovered someone else had the same idea and there#s look really smart as if built in by a proper carpenter and joiner. I now need a desl so I am going to take the top off an old Ikea buffet (lovely pine top with four drawers underneath and mount it onto an Ikea computer desk using just the sides. Then painting it in the lovely Ikea/Swedish red colour. Next time I go to Ikea I am going to look at everything and see how I can use it differently!!! Save a lot of money.
