How to soften the light of CFL bulbs

In a recent poll, 81% of Domino readers said they had made the switch to energy-saving light bulbs. Are you one of the remaining 19%? Or have you switched to ecobulbs only to find the light they emit unpleasant? Here are some ways you can make CFLs work in your home.

  • Try swapping out a white lampshade with a darker one to help diffuse the light.
  • Find a CFL that's dimmer-friendly. (Keep in mind that these bulbs don't yet offer the same range of light quality as incandescent. If you do install a CFL with a dimmer, be sure the package says the CFL is meant for this use.)
  • Decorate with pale colors and you'll need to use fewer lights to keep your rooms feeling light and airy.
  • If you're not convinced by CFLs, keep in mind other energy-saving (and cost-effective) alternatives like LED and halogen lights.
  • If nothing else, keep ecobulbs in mind for task-lighting. CFL lights are very efficient—the light is soft and shadow-minimizing—and perfect for tasks like reading, studying, hobbies, and the like.

Head over to Domino to find more tips for making the switch to ecobulbs!
