Spring cleaning has me throwing out unworn clothes, old books, and that useless stuff shoved under my bed. My need to get down to the basics is being fueled in party by my obsession with Playa del Carmen's Hotel Básico.
The design, based on the industrial oil rigs of 1950s Mexico, utilizes a green mentality with mosaic planter pots smattered throughout the rooms and
recycled floor tiles straight from "a Mexican grandmother's patio". The rooftop even features two concrete petroleum tanks that now serve as
(thoroughly cleaned-up) swimming pools.
The 1950s industrial theme continues in the rooms, with exposed
pipes and fire hydrant-style taps running along the walls, some even serving as storage for extra towels. The beds are hoisted on elevated platforms in the middle of the rooms, creating plenty of space for underbed storage (and motivation for keeping that underbed storage tidy). Floor-to-ceiling rubber curtains provide ample privacy with pulley
chain detailing throughout.
