Reader Question of the Day: What's the best way to clean miniblinds?

Shine user Karin recently posted a plea for tips on cleaning miniblinds: She has plastic and metal blinds both in need of a little TLC. She does not want to go after them blade by blade with an old toothbrush (or anything else, for that matter). Lucky for her, Blinds.com has a list of care instructions for aluminum blinds, wood blinds, and fabric shades, and the easiest option, at least for Karin's types, seems to be to remove the blinds from the wall, soak them in a tub of soapy water, then rinse well and air dry. Has anyone tried this? Or do you have another great strategy for cleaning blinds? Share your wisdom in the comments section.

soaking and air drying is good but if look cloae there will residue still there and water spots.best thing to do is get one of those swiffer gadgets and clean them at least every week, after you clean them a strip at a time with windex and papertowels.

Why not just pull the cord up and down really fast and let them dust themselves!

Honestly who has time to swiffer them every week, the tub works great and if done correctly doesn't leave water spots.

Soaking them works great, but if you have white mini blinds add 1 cup of bleach to very hotsoapy water and they come out like new! After the first rinse I spray with window cleaner and rinse again, air dry. I've never had the spotting problem.... good luck!

My blinds are way to long to soak in the tub. I used to vacumn them with the brush and that works just ok. Now I also Swifer them and papaer towel and windex them.

Mini-blinds are miserable to clean no matter how you do it! I spray mine with 409 first to loosen all the residue.(You'll see it run down the blind) then I soak the blind in hot soapy bleach water and hang outside to dry. After drying I use Jubilee Kitchen wax. Spray it on and wipe it off and you'll see a really nice shine. If the blind is too long for the tub, do as much of the blind that fits in the tub, then turn it around. I dip mine up and down a couple of times while they are soaking. There is no easy way, but when they are all done you'll be able to say, job well done! Oh yeah, the Jubilee helps to prevent the residue build up as long as you dust them frequently and the dust comes off with ease. I use my vaccum brush, it's alot quicker. Good Luck! I hope this helps.

I remove them from the wall, lay out a shower curtain on the grass and lay the blind on it. Get out the hose and a little Dawn dish soap and brush them with a soft long handled car brush. It takes about 5 minutes per blind. Then to dry, you hang them over the clothes line and with a light summer breeze they are dry in about 10 minutes and ready to hang back up. My blinds only get washed once a year. That's plenty !!!

I take mine down and buy new ones a couple times a year . They aren't that expensive and I HATE to clean them.

I was gonna say to do what #5 said, which is what I usually do. The added bleach whitens and also kills bacteria and helps prevent mold and mildew. However, what #3 says sounds like a lot more fun.
