What to Know Before You Shop
When it comes to warmth, knowing the fiber and fill used to make bedding is essential. To zero in on which type of bedding is best suited for you, it pays to know the lingo:
Acrylic
Soft, sturdy and pill-resistant, this man-made fiber delivers
medium warmth.
Bamboo
An eco-friendly fiber, bamboo yields a fabric that has medium
warmth and is akin to cashmere in softness.
Cashmere
A soft luxury fiber, which is prized for its superior warmth and
softness and is labor-intensively hand-combed from the hairs of
cashmere goats, most of which are part of small herds raised in the
Gobi Desert.
Cotton
This medium-warmth fabric requires little care, and is durable,
soft and moderately priced.
Down
The fill for higher-end duvets and pillows, down is
lightweight and very warm. Prices vary based on the type and amount
of down used.
Flannel
This soft woven fabric (typically made of cotton, wool or synthetic
fiber) usually doesn’t have a nap but gets its softness through the
loose spun yarn from which it’s woven. The higher the quality of
the flannel, the less likely it is to pill. Flannel is a
heavy-warmth fabric.
Fleece
Budget-priced fleece is a medium-warmth fabric that’s deep piled,
quite soft, durable and machine washable.
Ramie
Similar to linen, lustrous, extremely absorbent ramie is a strong
fiber, which is often blended with cotton, rayon, nylon and
polyester to increase its flexibility. It delivers a light level of
warmth.
Silk
Lightweight silk adapts to body temperature by absorbing body
moisture and providing natural ventilation so silk bedding feels
cool in the summer and moderately warm in the winter.
Wool
A high performance, durable fiber that is nearly as warm as
down.
Reversible Satin Comforter
Like a couture silk scarf, the Max Purple comforter dresses up the bed in feminine hues of blush and purple rose. Vertical quilting adds a modern touch and creates a tone-on-tone texture.
