4 more ways to cash in gift certificates

By Katie McCaskey, Geezeo.com

The person who gave you a gift certificate this year knew you’d appreciate the card’s spending flexibility. But what if you’re not a fan of the gift card store? For example, a friend of mine received a Wal-Mart gift card from her employer. Nice gesture, but, my friend personally disagrees with the company’s record on a number of social issues. What to do?

Here are four more ways you can cash in your gift certificates:

1. Donate Your Gift Card
Miss Manners never forbade anyone from giving. Find a person or organization that could use or appreciate your gift card. You continue the cycle of giving and another person enjoys the original gift-giver’s gift. Well done.

2. Sell Your Gift Card
The company that sold the gift card doesn’t really care who redeems it. You won’t get full value for the card but you might still be able to profit from it. The opening chapter FutureShop: How the New Auction Culture Will Revolutionize the Way We Buy, Sell, and Get the Things We Really Want by Daniel Nissanoff uses the example of a newly married couple with a lot of gift cards to a certain home store. They sold the gift cards and used the cash for something they truly wanted.

Some places to sell your cards (some for a small fee):

* Cardavenue.com
* Swapagift.com
* Plasticjungle.com
* Craigslist.org
* EBay.com
* GiftCardBuyBack.com

Buyer Beware: Resold gift cards can be a scam — one that leaves you with just a worthless plastic card. If you’re in the market make sure you know the person selling it to you or trust their online rating.

3. Mystery Gift It
You can play the role of mysterious Santa and leave the gift card where someone who would like it would appreciate it. Fun.

4. Use to Buy Something Useful — and Donate the Useful Item(s)
Here’s something one family member did: She used her unwanted gift card at a popular clothing store to buy sets of mittens and hats. Then she donated these items to a local children’s charity that collects warm winter clothing. I’d say that was a good use of an unwanted gift card!

    If it's free, it's for me. Never look a gift card in the mouth.

    Ha!. I was just this morning trying to figure out what to do with a gift card my daughter recieved this year. It is for Barnes& Noble. OK fine, the kids get one every year from the same relative. I have always enjoyed taking the kids to the bookstore after christmas to pick a new book.

    The older kids are not much of a problem, they pick one they want, wich usually costs more than the ten dollars on the card, so i pay the difference.

    The little one is a problem, we can be in there forever and never pick anything, I give up grab something, spend more than the gift card just to get out of the store with my now screaming kid.

    I thought this year I would do it online. Find something and have it delivered. Headache free.. Yeah right, for only ten dollars of stuff I have to pay shipping. And for tha total I may as well spend the gas, enter said store, deal with the tantrum, and still pay extra.

    larger chain stores also sell other companie's gift cards: meaning that you could buy a Nordstrom gift card with your Safeway gift card and ect.

    This one is simple. Use your Wal-Mart card to buy a restaurant gift card. Everyon has to eat. They sell restaurant gift cards right at Wal-Mart

    The company made its money when the employer bought the gift card. Not using the card makes no statement about Wal-mart and social issues; in fact, if she just doesn't use the card, then she gives Wal-Mart a double gift - her boss spends the money to buy the card and they don't have to give back any products for it - free money for Wal-mart. If you get a card for somewhere you don't like, these suggestions are helpful, but if you have ethical objections to the company, the best thing you can do is go use the card and at least make them cough something up for the money they got! Everyone can find something at Wal-mart, even if it's just laundry detergent and toothpaste.

    GG1000 has the best suggestion yet. Even if you buy goods that you use every day, you're still making Wal-mart cough up a product without pocketing 100% pure profit on no products at all.

    Laundry detergent, toothpaste, shampoo, pet food, people food... you name it and it can be found at Wal-Mart.

    Better yet, purchase a bunch of non-perishable food and donate it to the local food pantry. That's a WIN WIN for everyone.

    Back off Wal-Mart already. They have views that most do not agree with. SO WHAT all companies have views that you may or may not agree with. Everyone makes a big deal out of Wal-Mart because they are so big. Get off the band wagon and use the gift you were given. Apparently people love them because they have the success to prove it. Almost all companies suppport gays, political groups, organizations, have manufacturers overseas, or have skeletons in the closet. If you are so picky about Wal-Mart, why don't you research the places you DO shop. See if you agree with them. If not, you will probably find that you will have to live in the wilderness and forge for yourself because no one is working to please just you. You will have to ban all the stores. Stop being ungreatful and judgemental. Use the card or donate it to something you do agree with.

    Another useful thing is to use it to scrape the ice and frost off of your car! I already used my American Eagle gift card to scrape the ice off my car windshield!
