4 reasons we're excited Conan is taking over “The Tonight Show”

This evening at 11:35 pm ET will be the first night of Conan O’Brien as host of “The Tonight Show,” and we are stoked. We’ve loved Conan since day one (even though, admittedly, “Late Show” was pretty rough in the beginning) and we can’t wait to see which segments he keeps, what changes he makes to the program, and what he does differently in an earlier time slot. Jay Leno hosted “The Tonight Show” since 1992 but was a regular substitute for Johnny Carson since 1987. He won the ratings war in his time slot up until he left this past week. But times have changed, and we’re excited to a tall, Irish lad fill his seat. Here, four reasons why:

He’s young
Not only is Conan 13 years younger than his predecessor, Jay Leno, his whole shtick is young and fresh. He was a writer for “Saturday Night Live” in the late ‘80s, and is responsible for many recurring sketches like “Mr. Short-Term Memory" and "The Girl Watchers.” He also co-wrote “Nude Beach” and if you thought Andy Samberg’s “Dick in a Box” was racy, you should know that Conan beat ‘em to it, with the word “penis” being sung nearly 50 times. While the first few years of his 16-year stint on “Late Night” were shaky and received rough reviews, Conan quickly won over high school and college audiences. Today is about youth. We have a young president. Conan now brings this youthfulness to an earlier, more popular time slot, and we’re not mad about it.

He has a quirky sense of humor

Whether doing impressions, buttoning and unbuttoning his suit jacket, making weird voices, poking fun of people in the crowd, or creating awkward pauses for comedic effect, Conan’s style is all his own. It’s no wonder he wrote some of the best episodes of “The Simpsons” (Marge vs. Monorail, anyone?). Triumph, the Insult Comic Dog, may be an acquired taste, but that puppet made his mark in comedy and is still relevant—he appeared as recently as last night’s “MTV Movie Awards.” Conan has even taken his unique humor to two current faves, “30 Rock” and “The Office.” It worked.

He’s more “of the people”
You know how Leno has this massive car collection? It can’t help but make me think of a guy going through a mid-life crisis. Conan has never come off as rich or elite in any way. He also interacts with his audience more than any other late night host, which makes his seem accessible.

Self-degradation
Following in the tradition of David Letterman, Conan often pokes fun of his hair, his pale skin, his height and his clumsy nature. He also is the first one to admit perhaps a joke wasn’t funny. We love when people can laugh at themselves. It’s endearing.

Do you think Conan will be a good "Tonight Show" host replacement?

i am going to disagree with the comment on leno going through a mid-life crisis, you obviously have no idea how big of a car guy leno is. knowledge is power!!!! i do like conan though, he will be fine.

Leno has a huge car collection because he is a true lover of cars, similar to the way that you are a lover of sucking at writing. It has nothing to do with being in a midlife crisis.

It's fine to prefer Conan to Leno, but at least have your preference based on something other than your own ignorance, Joanna.

I love Conan. I used to have such a huge celebrity crush on him when I was younger. I am glad he will be on earlier since I have to get up early and usually miss his show.

I love that he has the quirky side to him. It makes late night funnier and I think it will add to when he has the "big" name celebrities. Not that he didn't have them on his show previously but now he will be exposed to a whole new group of people.

Kudos for him and best of luck.

I just don't think Conan is funny. Also, he doesn't have the personal warmth or touch that Leno or Letterman has. It's always a delight to watch Letterman or Leno with kids and animals. (Jack Hannah and his critters are back on Letterman tomorrow night). Plus, Conan's stupid bunny hop is childish.

The one with the quickest wit of all is Craig F. He can really work an audience.

So because someone has a large car collection, they must be an elitist and going through a midlife crisis? Jay Leno has been a car guy his whole life, he has been collecting cars and bikes since he began his career. He is very humble and always eager to talk to car guys as well as the rest of his fans. While I do prefer Conan's humor over Leno, you can't just make false accusations against Leno and make things up in an article to make "your point" rather than doing research.

So you're saying that being an automotive enthusiast makes you elite and suffering from a mid-life crisis? Or is that simply your uninformed, naval-gazing opinion? Perhaps some research is in order before you post such tripe, or would that simply be too difficult?

Leno is a car guy in its purest form. It has nothing to do with elite or mid-life and much to do with arrested development and youthful exuberance.

Thankfully Leno's legacy will last far longer than articles like this will be remembered.

Oh, and Conan will do a fine job.

It is astonishing how someone who knows so little about Leno can be tasked to write an article about him. Are you really so naiive that you believe that someone can't be a lover of cars (and all things mechanical) without being in a midlife crisis trying to prove something? This is the internet; use it to learn something.
