5 Worst Father's Day gifts

Why is it that we'll send Mom a bouquet of beautiful flowers for Mother's Day, but give Dad the dumbest stuff possible on his special day? Unless you've got a hate on for your pop, stay away from these cringe-worthy gifts.

1. Anything Homemade

Moms are wired to think anything you create is precious. Dads are not. At the end of the day, they're still dudes, which means that arts and crafts make their eyes glaze over. This also includes lame IOU coupons.

What to get him instead: There's one exception to this rule: If what you're making is edible (ie. cookies, brownies).

2. That Stupid Plaque With the Singing Fish or Some Other Novelty Gift

Your dad may have a goofy sense of humor, but no one thinks these things are that funny. So stay away from trash like dancing hamsters, "#1 Dad"-clad baseball caps, and cheesy neckties.

What to get him instead: "The Godfather Collection: The Coppola Restoration" DVD box set, $39.99

3. Anything that Says "Get to Work" or "Get in Shape"

This includes but is not limited to: lawnmowers, a car vaccum, 50-gallon trash cans, ab rollers, the multi-core-flex excel body gym machine, etc. Ugh.

What to get him instead: Ticketmaster gift card, and offer to go with him $25 - $250

4. Golf Gear or Fishing Accessories

We're willing to bet that if you get him more tees/balls/bait/knick-knacks/whatever, it's just going to go in a box with all the other stuff you've given him for previous Father's Days. The fact is, if he wants that kind of stuff, he'll get it himself.

What to get him instead: Victorinox Swiss Army wissFlash 4 GB, $54.95

5. Stinky Cologne

There is no way Daddy Dearest smells worse than what's inside some of those dusty bottles in the back of the drugstore. So leave his man-scent alone, unless it's a fragrance you know he absolutely adores.

What to get him instead: The Art of Shaving Starter Kit, $25

My dad would always return everything and then use the money on groceries. I have been buying him movie ticket gift cards and steak house gift cards for years. A night out on the town for free. :-)

when I was a kid, my dad loved the arts and crafts gifts! my mom was always judgemental of them because they weren't good enough. but my dad would proudly display his in his office. his faves were a blue ribbon I made him in 1st grade that said #1 dad and a collage I made him in jr. high with pics of the two of us.

now that I'm an adult, I usually take my dad out to lunch and buy him books. his birthday is also father's day weekend, so I may also get him a nice shirt or sweater. he hates shopping, so he likes to be set for the year with whatever I get him. :)

I have to disagree with #1. My dad actually prefers homemade stuff, especially photos as gifts. But, I admit, this year I'm stumped as to what to get him.

wow, such a harsh article! arts & crafts are great, my dad loved the vase I made him when I was 5! used it as a pen/pencil holder for a long time! having mom go buy him that expensive watch and say it came from you is not nearly as cute as a homemade picture frame with a picture of you two together inside. my dad is the exception to every item you listed except cologne, he doesn't wear it.

you must have had a sad childhood. my daughter is two and johnny treasures her every little photo and scribble drawing. one time a street drawn cartoon got food on it and he almost cried.

my grampa (who doubled as dad). would laugh every christmas as he'd unwrap a poorly stapled book of three looses leaf pages containing messy glued on comic strips of charlie brown and the fighorns from the Sunday paper. i used to think it was silly as i got older but later i realized that he had kept and re-read then all this time.

by the way, i asked johnny what he wanted one birthday, you know what he asked for? exercise equipment.

    real dad love sentiment.

    O.K.

I am a dad,and I can tell you this.Over the years I have gotten alot of gifts that were, well, not very personal. If you are going to give a gift it truly is the thought that counts, however you need to put some thought into it.One of the best gifts i have ever recieved was from my daughter who bought me a tool belt from a garage sale.no it was not expensive(or pretty for that matter)but at the time I was doing alot of remodeling on my garage and it was exactly what I needed. It showed that she knew enough about me and what I was doing in my life to think about what to get me.

My husband loves the #1 Dad shirts the kids get him. He is a late in life Dad - we got married when the kids where 18, 15, and 11 so he has to catch up on a lot of missed Father's Days. One year we forgot the T-shirt and he was disappointed.
