A little bit of Nostalgia

I went to Paris with my girlfriend at the time about 3 years ago. I've been to quite a few places in my lifetime, but I don't think I could remember the last time I felt as "out of place" as I did in Paris. Don't get me wrong, Paris was BEAUTIFUL. The city was one of the nicest I've ever been to and the food was amazing as well. It was the people though that made me feel "out of place". When you hear that France do not like Americans, believe it. If you go outside of the "touristy" area and to the heart of the city, you'll know what I'm talking about. Maybe it wasn't intentional, but it seemed like every person I talked to you either ignored me or rudely responded to my questions (usually about directions or recommending a place to shop/eat).

This video, triggered the nostalgia of this trip. It's a humorous take of Americans being "out of place" in France. It doesn't reference the people being snobbish, but it made me wonder if me and my girlfriend looked like this to the local population (minus knocking over the Eiffel Tower of course).

If you've been to Paris (or any part of France for that matter) what was your experience like? Was it completely pleasant? Did you experience problems with the locals? Just curious...

I didn't think the couple in the video felt "out of place." They also looked a bit too old to be jumping around, frolicking, and PDA'ing in Paris. Which brings me to my next point.

I can't blame the French for hating us. I would hate Americans, too, after that whole freedom fries thing. Most Americans think the French are sissies, but we still go and blow off a ton of cash in their cities, just because they're "romantic" getaways. I bet Paris is about as romantic to the French as downtown Washington, D.C., is to us.

I've never been to France, but I was born and lived in Europe until I was 14. Europeans in general, are not very accepting of foreigners. They'll treat you great as a guest, but don't think about hanging around for a long time. You could live in a country for 20 years and you'd still be considered a foreigner.

It's completely different in the USA. You live here for 5 years, you can apply for citizenship and you're considered an American. It's pretty nice, actually. And I do think Americans are a lot friendlier to strangers than Europeans.

tfrank- I love the beret she was wearing, LOL. I was in Paris a few years ago during the winter and I loved it. I had the opposite experience, with the exception of the guy making crepes in the Eiffel tower, he was irritable about something. The locals were all nice to us and we went everywhere from the tourist sites to the ritzy areas. There was one thing that did make me feel out of place: clothes! We were wearing jeans the entire time and everyone else was dressed to the nines! ooooo, now I want crepes :(

Yes it is true, France does not like Americans unless they need them.. But here is a bigger fact.. People from Boston, they are worse. They have no courtesy and they are rude.. I should know, they treat everyone like that, not just foreigners.. it's amazing.. try to cross the street.. Boston Cambridge, Arlington, Concord, Lexington pretty much all Massachusetts Especially BEDFORD, has outdone New York City and France by a long shot.. People are just mean and they don't care, I know, I lived there for Over 45 years and I will say what I want.. GET A FRIGGING CLUE.
