Am I the Only New Yorker Annoyed at This Baseball Parade?

Getting to the city from Staten Island is a fairly easy commute on any given day, including the weekends. Today I got up at 7:20am like I do every morning. Went through my morning routine, and left my house at 8:20am to catch the 8:45 ferry into the city. Except I completely forgot that this is not an ordinary day, oh no, today is the day New Yorkers celebrate the Yankees 27 th World Series.

I understand what it means to be excited because your favorite team/player has won. Trust me; this comes from a Mike Tyson fan back when he was a great boxer. I could even understand celebrating the team’s victory. Do you really have to hold up everyone trying to get to work on time? Must you be taking swigs from your Budweiser at 9 o’clock in the morning? Must you really pick a fight because someone tells you to sit up as you are taking four spaces lying down?

I’m proud to be an American, with the unemployment rate surpassing 10 percent since 1983 I would’ve thought that those people that have a job would be eager to get to work as opposed to missing work to celebrate with people that are not paying your mortgage/rent/food.

Am I the only New Yorker who thinks we give importance to things that really have no impact on the way we live? What are your thoughts?
