Are you taking a vacation this summer?

The unofficial start of summer arrives this weekend, but for many employed and unemployed workers, summer does not mean vacation. Not this year.

When asked how the recession has changed their 2009 vacation plans, 61 percent of Yahoo! HotJobs visitors said that they are not taking a vacation at all. Another 7 percent said they are taking less vacation time this year. In a CareerBuilder survey, 35 percent said they have not taken a vacation this year and do not plan to take a vacation; most of them (71 percent) said they could not afford a vacation. The hesitancy to make summer plans comes in a year when many companies are cutting back on paid vacation benefits, or forcing employees to take accrued vacation time this year so they can save in future years.

So even though 1 in 5 employees say they are worried they will lose their jobs or feel guilty being away from the office (CareerBuilder), the experts and any sane person will attest that it is important to take time away from the office, whether you are venturing far from home or not. So take a staycation, or just putter around the house or your hometown, but if you have a job and some vacation time due you in 2009, take it.

Are you planning to take a vacation this year? Or will you stay close to home or--egads--spend it working in the office?

This has been an almost overwhelming year for me. My husband (who I truely loved so much) decided that he did not want to be married anymore. Henceforth, the start of our divorce, which is still ongoing. I feel stuck between a marriage that I never wanted to leave and a single life that I am not quite ready to take on. I hear everyone around me making plans and I wonder where people like me fit in. Maybe you should count your blessings.

The recession is not going to take away my vacation with my family. We have had money saved and plan to use it to get out of our state and visit family. We are doing good financially, luckily.

I actually work for a hotel in a popular, national forest, and people are booking their summer trips!

This area, due to it's plethora of virtually free outdoor activities, has been a favorite vacation spot for many years. My family and I actually vacationed in the condo-resort I now work for. With 6 kids my parents were always thinking about our budget, but staying in a condo meant we could cook our own food and take picnic lunches on hikes. The pool and hotel ammenities were all the entertainment we needed, but as some of us got older and had jobs, we would actually save up and pay our own way to visit certain attractions.

Vacations are VITAL to our mental health and enjoyment of life. Think about camping trips or even frequent visits to nearby parks. Getting away from the daily routine is what I find most relaxing as a woman. If I am home, even lounging on my deck, I'm still thinking about changing the cat box, doing the laundry or running a grocery list in my head.

That being said, yes we're taking a summer vacation, white water rafting with my sister and her husband in Tennesee-we grew up loving the outdoors and it's our passion as adults. :)

We are - a week in July between summer camp for the kids - we are all going to Wyoming to see my father. It's been 20 years since I have been out west (just saw my dad last week when he was up), and we are staying at guest ranch out there - he's really good friends with the owners so our stay has been comped - which helped financially because we only had to pay for the airfare and the rental car. I think it's important to get away - even if its just for a weekend. Families need it.

Yes I am going on a vacation this summer. My siblings and I are getting together and going to Vegas for the Fourth of July. We've been planning this trip for months. We've all been saving and now the flights and hotel is completely paid for and since its 3 of us going we got to split the cost of the hotel room. I agree with everyone, a get away is totally necessary. Sometimes you just got to get away.....

Sanj: That's awful. That makes me so sad to hear that.

I am counting my blessings. My brother is getting married in July, so I took off work for that. For the same weekend my father-in-law and his wife paid for the entire family to go to Disney World (the trip is our birthday and Christmas gifts for this year.) Since my husband and I will be at the wedding that Saturday, we're flying down the Florida from Pennsylvania the next day to have a shortened vacation there (only two full days, and 2 partial days.)

Then in August we are going to the beach for a week with my husband's family. We put the down payment on the beach house last December before we found out how bad the economy was, and we prayed that we didn't lose our jobs, because we would lose that deposit money as well. We didn't have any vacation last year, and this year we have two! Thankfully we don't have to pay for both, because we couldn't afford that.
