- Humane Society and SPCA - I know I'm not the only person on the planet with a phone book. (Right?!) If you're not sure where your local Humane Society or animal shelter is, look in the Yellow Pages there (or online) for contact info. The larger organizations have websites — a quick search of the ASPCA NYC found several furry faces I can pick out as purebred!
- Petfinder - With 322,064 adoptable pets from 12,916 adoption groups, Petfinder is the largest resource for searching for a pet online. Not only are there tons of pups but they list Animal Welfare Organizations in your area, too, to help you make contacts for future animals.
- Local Breeders - It may seem counterintuitive to search for a rescue dog here but breeders are often familiar with local rescue groups or rehoming tips for dogs that may have been returned to them.
- AKC - The American Kennel Club not only suggests reputable breeders, it offers an alphabetical database of Breed Rescue Groups with contact information.
- Smaller Rescue Organizations - Many areas have private rescue organizations sometimes geared towards specific breeds or sizes, since they take in fewer pets and don't perform euthanasia. Other online resources to search for these include the database of Pets 911 (searchable by breed and location) and Adopt-a-Pet which has a Small Dog Rescue & Adoption feature, too.
