Borrow a book from BookSwim

We love books, especially those juicy, page-turning bestsellers. But in these recessionary times, the average cost of a hardback ($26!) has put a crimp in our reading style. Sure we frequent the public library when we can, but unfortunately we can’t ever seem to get our hands on the latest must-read due to long waiting lists. (Plus, the library doesn’t serve mocha lattes or let us browse in our pajamas at 2 a.m.)

Enter BookSwim, a Netflix-style service for readers that specializes in current hardcovers. The concept is simple. Sign up for a monthly subscription (ranging from $20-$40 depending on how many books you want to have checked out at one time). Then log on to the the BookSwim site and set up your reading list. BookSwim mails you the books you crave, along with a prepaid shipping mailer to send them back. Keep books as long as you like (there are no late fees) and Book Swim ships you more upon their return.
The site was founded by George Burke who used to spend hours reading the latest releases at his local bookstore café, then put them back on the shelf at the end of the night. He noticed others were doing the same thing and got inspired to create a community for readers like himself. Their motto: read more, pay less.

And if a must-read becomes a must-have, no problem. BookSwim’s “try before you buy” policy lets you pay for any book that you just don’t want to send back.

Regarding the books. You can get free paperbacks at bookswap.com You pay the postage. I haven't tried it yet but it's a great idea.

$20 to $40 a month? Um...really, that doesn't help those dealing with tight money. You can go to your local bookstore and get a better deal by using a free membership card. I don't see how this is a good idea, but who am I?

You could buy two new hardcover bestsellers or 4-5 paperbacks from amazon.com for less than a one month subscription price. This seems like a waste of money, not a savings.

Hey all. Eric from BookSwim here. Thanks for taking the time to have a real discussion about our service.

Re: Lucky - Book swapping is a great idea. You might also want to try paperbackswap.com and bookmooch.com. These sights are terrific for hard-to-find books and for getting rid of your old ones. It can be hard to get new releases and popular books though, since there are fewer being traded and more demand for them. Also, since it's a lot like an amazon market place, there's not a lot of accountability if your book never shows up.

Re: cb03manifold - BookSwim starts as low as $19.98 and the $40 plan you mentioned is to circulate 11 books at a time. For people reading dozens of books each month, $40 is usually way cheaper. And a member who pays $19.98 can easily get $75-$150 worth of bestsellers in that first month alone. BookSwim is a great way to have a dependable budget for your reading, and with our unlimited rental plans, members can get a real bang for their buck.

Re: Jax - You are correct. You could purchase 2 bestsellers or 4-5 paperbacks for the cost of BookSwim's most expensive plan. But you could rent far more titles and not be left with a pile of books you'll never read again taking up space.
