There are many adjustments one must make when one branches out on her own as a self-employed or freelance worker: when the copy machine jams, you have to fix it yourself; no one takes your trash out at the end of the day; and there's also no one to automatically design and order your business cards—but that's not actually such a bad thing, since corporate business cards are usually pretty boring. To help you get inspired to find cards that send just the right message—whether it's that you've got great taste or are a no-b.s. kind of person—we've rounded up 8 distinctive options for your consideration. All you've got to do now is pick a style (or design your own), brush up on your networking skills, and, ahem, learn to operate your copy machine like a pro.

I think these are awesome, depending on the type of business you're in. I'm a very creative person and I hate handing out cards in every shade of beige my company gives me. Unique ones are much more memorable. My brother works for a glove company and his cards are in the shape of a tiny hand. People freak when he gives them one.

I love the moo cards, just ordered a bunch for my personal blog. But now I am coveting the S. Jane cards. I couldn't find them on her etsy page though!

Yeah, I think the S. Jane cards are just an example of some she made for herself, but she does take custom orders...I bet something like this that's already more or less designed would be easy to adapt for new customers.

Hand carved stamps aren't hard to make yourself. Go to a craft store, pick out your size stamp block. (They already have these with wood on one side and rubber on the other.) Pay for it. Take it home. Print out in mirror image want you want on the stamp. Tape it to the stamp block. Use an exacto knife to cut it out. Apply ink. Stamp.

The more distinctive, the better. I much prefer a card that stands out in a crowd.
