Call and Response: What do you collect?

You could make that case that everything in your home says something about you—and to some extent, it does—but when it comes to the big purchases, it's normal (and practical) to go a little more neutral, and let the little things like throw pillows and table lamps do the talking. (After all, just because you have a comfy beige sofa doesn't mean your personality is beige, it just means you've found a great base piece that you can redecorate around on a whim, as often as you'd like.) With that in mind, we want to get to know you, our readers, through your meaningful details, particularly your collections. Tell us what you collect, why, and what your favorite piece is. Better yet, post a blog about it (and put "Collector's Edition" in the title if you will). To kick things off, I'll share some of the themes that have been multiplying around my house over the last few years.

My longest-running set is a parliament of owls. (What is better than the scientific names of animal groupings? I just don't know. A murder of crows, people, a murder of crows!) My first (and one of my favorites) is the fall-foliage-inspired metal guy at the left of the photo above. I picked him up at a thrift store in Oklahoma for a couple of bucks about 4 years ago, and he's been gathering friends ever since. His brethren on the shelf came from an eBay lot that another owl-loving friend won. My sister picked up the gold necklace charm at left at the Rose Bowl Flea Market in Pasadena, and he never has found his way onto a chain. He seems to fit in better at home.

The owl in the glass here was a gift a friend brought back for me from Spain. He is painted wood and very serious-looking. (A mini-collection of old printing-press "V" blocks—and a shark tooth—are gathered around his case.)

I've also found my way into a small-but-growing collection of antique needlepoint art as well as a bunch of old keys—which remind me of all the years my father was a locksmith when I was growing up.
Now it's your turn: what do you collect? Post a blog and see it featured on the At Home channel of Shine!

I collect cookbooks. They could be comprised of recipes that i would never dream of making but I still keep em'. Actually, the wackier the better. My favorite right now is "Small Bites Big Nights" by Govind Armstrong.

It turns out I collect pitchers, large and small, antique, pottery, whatever catches my eye. It's not that I set out looking for them, but when I see one I like, I bring it home. A few blue and white china creamers my mother-in-law collected got me started, though I haven't added to my collection in awhile. They do make me happy when I look at the curves and flourishes of the handles, and the colors of the designs.

I collect black bears, not the fake looking ones but the real ones. I don't know why I chose bears but I like them. I would so love to own a black bear robe. They are all over my home, candle holders, statues, pictures, on vases, etc. but I love em.

I collect plates, it is a new collection of the last few years. See my blog post on plates: http://serendipityandspark.blogspot.com/2008/04/one-plate-two-plate-three-plate-four.html

I also collect hallmark cards - I buy them with the intention of writing in them but then just keep them for "the next opportunity to write".

I collect glass swans and glass bottles you find in the antique stores. They usually run around $45 in the stores but my grandmother finds them for .50 cents to a couple of dollars at yard sales! I have them setting on shelves and in corners rooms. The different colors and sizes of the bottles places together remind me of little castles.

I collect teapots, everything from unique to Old English. My grandmother did this, and she left me several of hers. I haven't bought a new teapot in quite a while, I have more than enough, but if I happen to see one that catches my eye, I'll get it.

This past year I've begun to collect decorative pill boxes and egg coddlers. I've purchased most of them from sellers on eBay. It amazes me how many people collect these items.

My sister showed me your posting on the owls, and we both agree that the original owl in your collection is a dead ringer for an owl our grandmother had in her collection when she passed away. That was in the panhandle of Texas 13 years ago. Wouldn't it be interesting if your owl was once hers, and we had gotten another chance to see it again all these years later?

Okay, I'll answer the question at hand. I collect golf balls with the logos of the courses I have played.
