Call and Response: What do you collect?
editor
You could make that case that everything in your home says something about you—and to some extent, it does—but when it comes to the big purchases, it's normal (and practical) to go a little more neutral, and let the little things like throw pillows and table lamps do the talking. (After all, just because you have a comfy beige sofa doesn't mean your personality is beige, it just means you've found a great base piece that you can redecorate around on a whim, as often as you'd like.) With that in mind, we want to get to know you, our readers, through your meaningful details, particularly your collections. Tell us what you collect, why, and what your favorite piece is. Better yet, post a blog about it (and put "Collector's Edition" in the title if you will). To kick things off, I'll share some of the themes that have been multiplying around my house over the last few years.
My longest-running set is a parliament of owls. (What is better than the scientific names of animal groupings? I just don't know. A murder of crows, people, a murder of crows!) My first (and one of my favorites) is the fall-foliage-inspired metal guy at the left of the photo above. I picked him up at a thrift store in Oklahoma for a couple of bucks about 4 years ago, and he's been gathering friends ever since. His brethren on the shelf came from an eBay lot that another owl-loving friend won. My sister picked up the gold necklace charm at left at the Rose Bowl Flea Market in Pasadena, and he never has found his way onto a chain. He seems to fit in better at home.
The owl in the glass here was a gift a friend brought back for me from Spain. He is painted wood and very serious-looking. (A mini-collection of old printing-press "V" blocks—and a shark tooth—are gathered around his case.)
I've also found my way into a small-but-growing collection of antique
needlepoint art as well as a bunch of old keys—which remind me of all the years my father was a locksmith when I was growing up.
Now it's your turn: what do you collect? Post a blog and see it featured on the At Home channel of Shine!
