Looking back on my green year, my family and I have actually made a few changes we're proud of, starting with active composting! I'm lucky to live in a very eco-minded city like San Francisco that offers curbside composting. They take all my organic waste and turn it into awesome mulch that's either used on city parks or actually sold to farms. And once I got composting, I realized just how little trash I actually throw out that's NOT compostable. On the energy-saving front, we also put our energy-sapping electronics - like our TV and laptops - on power strips that we turn off during the day (man, it saves us a lot of money each month). Plus, we also wash most of our laundry in cold water, drive a lot less, and try to shop for locally-grown foods.
Now, we're thinking of ways to instill some green values in our little daughter, like not wasting water and energy. But this Earth Day has also got me thinking bigger picture: Can we grow more of our own food? Can we do anything to generate any of our own power? I mean, they're wild ideas, but hey, it's Earth Day!
To help get you thinking green, we Shine editors have rounded up a bunch of Earth Day-related stories from around Shine, and also included some links to our sister site, Yahoo! Green, that has a very special Earth Day package running right now. Go check 'em out. And also, Shine ladies, let us know in the comments what you've done this year or are planning to do in the coming year to make your lives just a little bit greener.
