Celebrate Earth Day on Shine!

April 22 is Earth Day, the day of the year when we feel most motivated to reflect on how green we, our families, and our communities really are. And for most of us, it's also a day when we also realize just how much greener we ought to be.

Looking back on my green year, my family and I have actually made a few changes we're proud of, starting with active composting! I'm lucky to live in a very eco-minded city like San Francisco that offers curbside composting. They take all my organic waste and turn it into awesome mulch that's either used on city parks or actually sold to farms. And once I got composting, I realized just how little trash I actually throw out that's NOT compostable. On the energy-saving front, we also put our energy-sapping electronics - like our TV and laptops -  on power strips that we turn off during the day (man, it saves us a lot of money each month). Plus, we also wash most of our laundry in cold water, drive a lot less, and try to shop for locally-grown foods.

Now, we're thinking of ways to instill some green values in our little daughter, like not wasting water and energy. But this Earth Day has also got me thinking bigger picture: Can we grow more of our own food? Can we do anything to generate any of our own power? I mean, they're wild ideas, but hey, it's Earth Day!

To help get you thinking green, we Shine editors have rounded up a bunch of Earth Day-related stories from around Shine, and also included some links to our sister site, Yahoo! Green, that has a very special Earth Day package running right now. Go check 'em out. And also, Shine ladies, let us know in the comments what you've done this year or are planning to do in the coming year to make your lives just a little bit greener.

Earth Day is retarded?! I think you're the retard-it's a day for awareness. We should think about ways to help the earth on ALL days!! Do you forget where you live?? On EARTH. I'm not a tree hugger by the way...I just think it's a shame that people like you could care less.

For the past year I have been exclusively using reusable shopping bags at the grocery store instead of their plastic bags. It's so easy! Just leave the bags in your car or hang them by the door. I also participate in curbside recycling, and I do little things like turn off the tap while brushing my teeth and turn off lights I'm not using. I also use reusable stainless steel water bottles and just fill them up at the sink instead of buying bottled water to carry around. I also walk or ride my bike when I can instead of driving, but that's hard to do in my community which isn't very pedestrian-friendly. If my city were large enough to have a reliable public transportation system (frequent buses, subway, etc.) then I would happily use it instead of my car. But all we have are buses that don't run very often.

My sons and I are planting a tree and some flowers after school/work today. I want to make them aware of going "green" so they have something to look forward to when they grow up. They have already learned about recycling and about turning off the lights and water when they are not in use. If we start them off young, then the routine should be easier when they are older. Happy Earth Day everyone.
