Celebrity egos too big to work with

Have you ever worked with someone really cocky who always wanted to get his way no matter what the cost? Now imagine if that person was Kanye West. He was supposed to co-headline a tour with Lady Gaga, and if you know anything about her, you know her provocative outfits, unique image and bountiful hits are strong enough to measure up to a big act like Kanye. That said, their perhaps aptly titled "Fame Kills" tour has been canceled due to "creative differences." Was Kanye worried that Gaga would upstage him? Was Gaga afraid to be linked to him after his obnoxious stint at MTV's Video Music Awards? That's all still unclear. What we do know is the duo couldn't work together, tickets are being refunded, and Lady Gaga is putting together her own smaller tour.

A similar thing happened a few years ago when Jay-Z went on tour with R. Kelly. The "Best of Both Worlds Tour" was killed prematurely when R.Kelly claimed that Jay-Z's bodyguards attacked him. Jay-Z said that was not true. During the time, Kelly was going through his child molestation proceedings, and perhaps Jay-Z didn't want his name tarnished by working with him. Either way, it was another example of celebrity ego when Kelly went on a rampage and dropped out, leaving fans disappointed.

Though we're not sure we believe all the rumors, people behind the scenes of "Sex and the City" have always claimed that Sarah Jessica Parker and Kim Cattrall don't get along, since each views herself as the star. Back in the '90s, this was the source of conflict among Shannen Doherty and Jennie Garth on "Beverly Hills 90210" as well. Girl singing groups notoriously fight about the dynamics of a balanced group versus one star dominating due to a big ego. (Think all the way back to Diana Ross and the Supremes and the premise of "Dreamgirls.")

Some stars prefer lashing out at underlings. Katherine Heigl is another star who has come under fire for her egotistical remarks. She's complained incessantly about her work schedule--one that all TV stars have to deal with--and put down the writers of her show, "Grey's Anatomy." Remember when she withdrew her name from Emmy contention, claiming the writing had gone downhill and that she didn't deserve the award since her character wasn't up to par? What a slap in the face to the writers who helped make her into the star she is today. And then there are people like Christian Bale, who think it is OK to berate the crew members around them, as he so famously did on the set of "Terminator."

With stars constantly being photographed and interviewed, and making loads of money, it's no wonder their egos get built up quickly and unreasonably, but there is a way to have an ego and still be humble and considerate of those around you.

Have you had any experiences with cocky bosses or coworkers?

I work with talent every day and not one day goes by that I don't have to do something "special" for each and every one that I talk to and do business for. I've actually told a few "you might have been on the screen, but you're a&& isn't made of heaven dust - so get over yourself." That seems to shut them up - at least for a little while - they either have that 'I never' look on their face or they get up and walk out; either way, I'm happy. ;)

TLWGal 37...What are YOU talkin about? Barack Obama is the farthest thing from a big ego...

On another note, yes, I have worked with a huge egomaniac...He is by far the most annoying person I have ever had to work with! He's in his mid 50's and acts like a 5 year old when he doesn't get his way...And he always thinks his way is the best way

There is a difference between someone being over confident for no reason at all and then those with the real deal. It's a different kind of feel than arogance to be made up like everything else around you and still be something more. That's like asking you to respect ants and don't crush them without thinking about it... but that is the way of the world to hate what they can't conquer and destroy what they don't understand. I am in no way comparing anybody to Jesus, but what if he was considered cocky for his time because his truth wouldn't fit thier reality. He was a whole lot more than they would have allowed him to be.

Barack Obama does not appear to have a big ego. Even if he did, he earned it (got voted into it by an overwelming majority) honestly. Apparently, it was time for a change. I would say the biggest ego was the person who took the country into war claiming "weapons of mass destruction", invaded a country and executed the leader without a rebuild and exit strategy, gave the children "no child left behind", spent trillions of tax payer dollars, and did not apologize for the collapse of the economy fueled by funding a war with a questionable reason as to why this country was invaded initially. Talk about BIG EGO.

Shreky - That's not a big ego, that's just some serious mismanagement.

And I've encountered so many big egos, it's ridiculous. Several of them are close friends of mine... I don't know how I put up with it.

politics and entertainment are interesting industries. the people who tend to go into them tend to be the ones that go into them for the wrong reasons. they are attention-starved and insecure and feed off of the approval they get from others. the actors who do it purely for the art and the politicians that do it purely to serve others are few and far between. and the funny thing is that when the attention-craving types get to the point where people are actually giving it to them and feeding their egos, they fall for the hype and start to feel they are better than others. i guess humility isn't a trait those types posess either. i hope one day american society will wake up and stop feeding egotistical, attention-hungry, fame wh-res and start to value humility and self-deprecation...or at the very least, people who can pretend to posess those virtues.
